Other entertainment entries included the Season 34 finale of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” which scored its best season ender in nearly a decade. Also: the post-Super Bowl episode of Fox’s “The Floor” and the series premiere of CBS’ “Watson,” which aired behind the AFC championship in January.
Also notable, particularly given the cloud now surrounding what has happened to “60 Minutes” under new CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, the stalwart newsmagazine last seven slots in the top 100 this year (up from four last year).
NBC’s “Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special” beat any regular primetime series performance with a whopping 16.5 million viewers.
But the real hero for a second year in a row is CBS’s hit “Tracker,” which scored a remarkable 19 episodes on the year’s top 100 primetime telecasts ranker.
Among entertainment telecasts, live awards shows still lead, starting with the 97th Oscars — the only non-sports telecast to clock the top 20. The Grammys and the Golden Globes are also in the top 100.
This year’s list was led, of course, by Fox’s coverage of Super Bowl LIX, which attracted an average of 126.7 million viewers as Philadelphia beat Kansas City on Feb. 9. Among other pro sports, all seven of the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Toronto Blue Jays World Series made it to the top 100 ranker.
This year, a full 48 of the top 100 slots went to NFL games — up from 45 in 2024 — and that number actually jumps to 55 if you include six NFL-related studio shows (four of Fox’s “The OT,” plus a CBS post game and one from NBC’s “Football Night in America”) and one weather delay.
There are two things you can count on right now in television: football and “Tracker.” Both once again dominated Variety’s annual look at the most-watched telecasts in primetime.

Dr. Phil launched his Merit Street TV network in 2024 with a paltry 27,000 viewers. Just a year later, Merit Street Media filed for bankruptcy and sued its partners at the Trinity Broadcasting Network. In 2025 it dropped the most of any network on our ranker: down 41%, to just 16,000 viewers.
Channels with “Family” in their titles did not fare well in 2025. Family Entertainment TV, down 29%. Great American Family, down 18%. Hallmark Family, down 14%. Discovery Family Channel, down 22%.
The French Open clearly had an impact on Tru TV. Ratings for the tournament were up 25% this year, which explains why TruTV bucked the trend of cablers (including its other Warner Bros. Discovery siblings), jumping 46% in viewers and 27% in 18-49.
Sports! ESPN’s still got it, and this year climbed 18% — the most of any network in the top 30 among total viewers. The other big story is ESPN in adults 18-49, where this year it’s one of the Big 4 — jumping 10% to rank as the No. 4 network in primetime, beating out CBS.
Speaking of controversial companies that had reason to cheer, Nexstar saw The CW network climb 13% in total viewers, while NewsNation grew 16% — albeit, from low numbers. But a shift toward more live sports is clearly having an impact on The CW, which also saw its adults 18-49 rating climb a hair.
