I talk about tech ethics, music, cats, and chocolate, not necessarily in that order. Fan of the very practical and the extremely absurd. she/her

The only thing that’s surprising about this story is that the stealing scammers actually responded to the public outcry.

Abolish ICE is the moderate position.

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Exactly; one of the reasons for submitting code for review is to aid understanding across the team. Submitting AI-generated code that can't be explained to the team prevents this.

this is a very good thread. the point of rough drafts is that by creating them, you *learn about the nature of the problem you are trying to solve* and your new understanding shapes your strategy

The Trump administration putting the screws to their most consistent racist voters in the northeast, The White Men of Boston, just before the midterms seems like a bad plan

When people hear "it saved my life", there’s a presumption made that we mean without it we would quite literally die. And for many of us, that's absolutely true... But for those of us who rely upon it regularly.... it means our lives are made so much better now that they actually feel worth living."

This is fantastic, and it's something that we've been saying for years.

When companies say that are using "AI for climate change", they are referring to much smaller models used for doing things like climate modeling.

Massive generative AI models are NOT USEFUL for mitigating climate change.

One thing that I rarely hear discussed is how we feel about outsourcing biases to a few private companies run by billionaires with no regulation or oversight. Not saying the current system is unbiased or good but it feels like we’re just replacing one devil with another.

openAI was never a nonprofit in the sense of not trying to make money

but it's still a nonprofit in the sense of "not turning a profit"

Sometimes I have too many tabs, so my solution is to just open a new window. Then that one gets filled with tabs, so I open yet another new window. I can only imagine that the more times I do this, the better my mental health will be. Right? Right??

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

this is why i use "predictive model" and ask "what does it predict?"

they used a tool that predicts whether an "amino acid in a protein is likely to contact whatever chemicals that structure can bind"

and one that "predicts whether any given protein is likely to form a stable structure"

This morning, Ms. Rachel and I visited District 2 Pre-K Center, where we sang and read with the wonderful students and educators. We also discussed universal childcare - and how we're making it happen for NYC!
