And it came to pass that the people confused knowing about a thing with having expertise in that thing. And lo, a cacophony of voices was heard throughout the land expounding on all manner of things in tones of grave authority. And the Lord looked down upon what he had created and sighed heavily.

a minor character in Mervyn Leroy's Gold Diggers of 1933. an older man in an expensive suit and wire-rimmed glasses stares into the middle distance, saying: "I don't know why she did, but she called me 'fuffy.'"

sometimes you just never find out why she called you "fuffy"...and it haunts you for the rest of your days

one was a sheep rancher in central Utah (also a banker and a state legislator).

the other started a large culvert company...and was also a Seabee who fought in both world wars and was instrumental in creating the infrastructure for the storming of Normandy.

The question is always "what if a kid is wrongfully transitioned" and never "what if a trans kid is denied the ability to transition and endures years of excruciating dysphoria and has to have multiple surgeries later in life to fix the issues caused by going through the wrong puberty."

is this a perfect process? of course not. but in all my years of practice, I have yet to have a single trans youth I have worked with express any regret about the decisions this process has led them to make.

taking a child's self-report of their experience of gender at face value is not a problem. a client's self-report is vital information. as a therapist, you follow that information across time. a client who consistently and coherently reports the same experience over time is telling you who they are.

as a therapist who works with trans youth, what I do is listen to my clients. I believe what they tell me about their experience. I sit with that experience, which may or may not evolve. I do this in consultation with parents.

I am not in the business of telling anyone what they are or are not.

scene from Mervyn Leroy's 1932 film Three in a Match. a woman is in a salon, her hair is being curled by a contraption hanging down from the ceiling, with electrical cords attached to each of the curlers. it has the look of a cheap sci-fi set.

couldn't decide whether I wanted a brain transplant or to get my hair done, so I asked for both

Photo of wren. Description from ebird: β€˜A very small, dark grayish-brown bird with a short tail, a reddish-brown throat, and a black-and-white scalloped pattern on the belly. Inconspicuously feeds in low, thick vegetation, where it is very hard to see. Similar to Rufous-throated Wren-Babbler, but Mishmi Wren-Babbler is darker overall, with a distinctive white chin and a white edge to the throat. The song is a strong, melodic burst of notes repeated 2-4 times and often followed by a short trill.’
