Why do otherwise smart people assume everyone on X is a slave to the algorithm? We sane people have our own curated lists and read them in chronological order. There's also a much fuller choice of content than on Bluesky, which has holes you could drive an aircraft carrier through.

This is the most pertinent comment on the original post, which we've allowed ourselves to drift from. I keep asking myself, Why is it that I strongly support leftist politicians in the US, but get turned off by many leftists in Japan? The answer is probably too complex for character-limited Bluesky.

Besides his analysis being insulting to independent voters, the question still remains as to what constitutes "liberal" in the Japanese political context. I personally find the JCP to be among the most conservative of all parties.

Not the first time I've read an analysis of Japan's political scene like this one, but I'm curious what Bluesky Japan watchers think of it

I was there for it, living on Masonic (Upper Haight) across the street from Willie Brown. My biggest regret is not taking photos (no smartphones in those days).

We don't eat meat and don't feel the need for meat-like substances, either. There is so much real, nutritious, delicious food that is neither of those.

I'm not talking just about opinions or commentary, but about people doing real polls analysis, district by district, who turned out to be totally accurate.

I respect that choice, and respect you as an expert on Japanese political history. Your substack article on Ishiba was a masterpiece. At the same time, your aversion to Twitter leaves you without a key tool for monitoring what Japanese voters and pols are thinking. That's a choice, but it matters.

The algorithm is irrelevant if you avoid the "For you" and just follow chronological lists you yourself have curated.

For a while I thought I understood that reluctance, but now I see it as a question of whether I want to live in a big city or in the suburbs, and I'll always choose the big city. Even with all its faults, it has far more to offer. The truth is, most people still live there, not here.

In any case, I just don't understand this nostalgia for Google Reader, which was always a limited tool compared to the other RSS readers even back then, and even more so today.

Both Inoreader and Feedly have functions that attempt to create an RSS feed from websites that don't offer them. But the absolute best way to follow such sites is to use WebSite-Watcher, which works with all kinds of sites and even Twitter, including lists.

Facebook consists of friends and relatives, so of course there's going to be more engagement, on every single post. As for Mastodon, there's a sense of community that comes from being "different" and that tends to breed engagement.

It may not be limited to Bluesky but it certainly doesn't happen on Facebook or on Mastodon, for example. (It's also possible that Fedman mutes me, for whatever reason.)

I haven't noticed that problem. And the newest readers can even follow sites that don't support RSS.

What's wrong with using an RSS reader, like Inoreader, Feedly, or NewsBlur? In many ways they are far better than Google Reader ever was. You can still follow all the blogs like in the old days, and also follow news and other sources of all kinds.
