Modulo Chapter 21 The Japanese government had snap elections this week, electing a right-wing government during an era of increasing authoritarianism around the world. From the perspective of a metaplot, it's hard to read Modulo as anything other than a story grappling with xenophobia and trying to find the balance between birth citizens of a nation and refugees seeking new homes. As the chapter opens, we discover Tsuguri allowed himself to be stabbed instead of killing Maru, remembering his grandmother Maki's lament that there might have been a different way for her to gain power that didn't stem from the death of her sister. Lying on his side bleeding, Tsuguri confesses he's just a kid and doesn't know what to do, which leads to the following monologue from Maru, which deserves to be read in full:
