Even the official ISO standard shortform code for the country is GB, as in "united kingdom of *G*reat *B*ritain and northern ireland". The logic was that "United" and "Kingdom" were too generic terms to use (many countries have those words in their name). See also AE instead of UA for the UAE (1)
