The Mindbenders are also the answer to the question "who was the first English band to play the Fillmore?" (July 8-9 '66 w/Chocolate Watch Band). Van Morrison and Them had played two weeks earlier, but they of course were Irish.

oh yeah, I saw this one. Keith just amazing. They played Music Never Stopped, the crowd went nuts, Jerry took off his guitar, and Phil ran up to him holding up his finger "one more, one more." Jerry strapped on and launched "Scarlet Begonias."
Although it has no connection to the Garciaverse, Holly Penfield, who was just a scrambling singer/songwriter at the time, went on to have a long and diverse career.

I believe, though cannot confirm, that Jerry Garcia had seen Bob Dylan & The Band a few weeks earlier at Oakland Coliseum Arena. The surprise appearance of βBaby Blueβ may have been a nod to that.
Opening act Dancing Food & Entertainment was a Berkeley band. Singer Naomi Eisenberg would end up in the Hot Licks. Bassist Tom Glass had been in the Redwood Canyon Ramblers, Berkeleyβs first bluegrass band, and also the Jazz Mice with Ian Underwood. He also did poster art as βNed Lamont.β
Jan 22 β72, Traffic at Winterland. Dave Mason joins for the encore, βHeadmanβ plus βDear Mr Fantasy.β Second encore Mason and Carlos Santana rip up a 13 min βGimme Some Lovinβ.β We shall not pass this way again.

Keystone Berkeley ad for the SF Chronicle on Sunday, November 14, 1976. Phil Lesh and Tooloos open for the Sons Of Champlin on that night.
Andeux, what great ears you have. Not only did Tooloos open for the Sons Of Champlin at Keystone Berkeley on Sunday, Nov 14 '76. They were even in the ad, and we just missed it.
I updated the post accordingly. (@bourgwick.bsky.social, check it out)
A flyer for Too Loose Ta Truck (as Touloos Ta Truck), with Phil Lesh, playing Berkeley's Long Branch on Wednesday May 26, 1976
Organist John Allair was the key player in Too Loose Ta Truck. He was a Marin legend, and played regularly with Van Morrison for decades. This photo is probably from the early 1960s.
Van Morrison met organist John Allair and drummer Steve Mitchell when he dropped in on their duo gig at lounge called Shipwreck Pete's. Shipwreck Pete's was at the Sportsman Lodge in Novato (now a Days Inn). It was the only music venue in Novato, and one of the few in Marin County with a full bar. Phil Lesh probably dropped in as well, even if he didn't play. Shipwreck Pete's was just a few miles from the site of Rancho Olompali, which looms large in Grateful Dead history.
Too Loose Ta Truck, w Phil Lesh, Terry Haggerty, John Allair and Steve Mitchell, only played 6 gigs back in 1976. It was Phil's only bar band. Why? I review their history, such as it is, in detail. It seems to have been about making a living.

Seiter's bio came out long after Blair's book. I assume Blair went on the best info available at the time, which wasn't much. As for Seiter, well, you can read it

The Dead did not appear in British Columbia. Written about in detail for those of you--probably just me--who read through the 7-volume memoirs of Byrds road manager Jimmi Seiter.
Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the LA Dodgers, as I recall, popularized by Joe Garagiola on NBC (Baseball) Game Of The Week.
The Denver Family Dog had been at 1601 W Evans back in β67, right?
An epic show. There were rumors in the parking lot pre-show that K&D had left the band. Kinda half true actually, but there they were on stage. A bunch of breakouts. The Godchauxs went out with an absolute banger.
If this happened, it must have been a strange train wreck of a bill.
I thought Bloomfield wasnβt at Woodstock?
John McLaughlin opening the show (as part of Tony Williams Lifetime, with Larry Young on organ)
It behooves me not to disappoint Moby Grape completists, however. Here's my outdated-but-still-best-in-show Moby Grape concert timeline from 1966-69. The first of six parts:

Yes, the Chateau Liberte, quite a tale, so unlikely it must be true

Greg Rolie in William Penn & His Pals. He would quit to join the Santana Blues Band in late β66.
I saw Be-Bop Deluxe a few years after this (in SF in β77) and they were just fantastic (opener was Tom Petty, btw).
mystery solved. Hendrix manager Mike Jeffery would have have known that (he wanted to control the entire bill on his tour, not have any locals, and thus reap all the fees).
OK, I just checked and Eire Apparent were from Belfast, but for some reason they were exempt from the union rules which capped the number of English bands that could tour the States (which was dropped by '69).
The Irish band Eire Apparent (formerly People) have their name here wrongly as Heir Apparent, which tells us the name was likely dictated to the artist over the phone. Eire Apparent was on the tour because Hendrix's manager had needed a band that had Irish passports rather than UK ones (really).
Didnβt Stretch (Nov 13) feature members of the infamous false Fleetwood Mac of 1974?
Iβd certainly never heard this tape. Rectifying that now. What a great find.
On Feb 11 (the night before a US holiday), the Allmans had jammed with the Dead. But on Friday Feb 13, after the early sets, and during the Dead's first set, Duane Alllman led a delegation of musicians over to Slug's to the see the Sun Ra Arkestra.
Oh I'm all over this one...

Opening act Quiver included guitarist Tim Renwick and drummer Willie Wilson, who both played with Floyd during the brief tour for The Wall (1980ish).
