➡️ preprint from the lab! Bacteria have loads of antiviral defences in their mobile genetic elements (MGEs). So when MGEs move between bacteria, the defences move with them, generating a fast turnover of defences in bacteria. But what about the antiviral defence turnover in the MGEs themselves? 🤔

We’ve published a wee pilot study assessing the utility of metagenomics & full-length 16S sequencing for the detection of seasonal pathogens (and AMR) in our local urban recreational swimming hot-spot
Check it out if you’re into that stuff :)

It is good to be out in the snow with my cross county ski's.
Last year, we proposed a model of plasmid evolution via fusion and fragmentation (via mge mediated recombination) generating mosaics, by studying historical isolates. Excited to see a MASSIVE paper from @jrpenades.bsky.social , @epcrocha.bsky.social expanding on this

starting March 1, 2026, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences are prohibited from using central government funds to pay Article Processing Charges for high-priced OA journals, specifically Nature Communications and Science Advances.
So those numbers are correct. And honestly it is insane those prices.
From the Nature communications website
APC is 5490 pound / 7350 dollar / 6150 euro

Oh that makes wonder if the other half of experts has ties with the too expensive USA healthcare system. That would help.
Kallas, a former Estonian prime minister, also offers a bit more on Rubio’s speech, as she says “there were messages for us, and they were messages for the public in America.” “For me, every time I hear this European bashing – it’s very in fashion right now – I’m thinking of what is the alternative and, and really, I mean, all the best or good things that we got from Europe, and all the good things that Europe actually represents.” But she says she gets some reassurance from Rubio’s comments: “The message that we heard from there is that America and Europe are intertwined; have been in the past and will be in the future. I think this is important. It is also clear that we don’t see eye to eye in all the issues and that this will remain the case as well, but I think we can work from there.” She also takes a dig at the US, saying: “Coming from a country that is #2 in the Press Freedom Index hearing criticism regarding press freedom coming from a country that is #58 on this list is interesting.” Ouch.
EU’s Kallas is speaking on the main stage now. In her first response to Rubio’s speech yesterday, she somewhat snarkily says that “contrary to what some may say woke decadent Europe is not facing civilizational erasure,” and says that many countries still “want to join our club – and not just fellow Europeans,” pointing to Canada.
It is so refreshing to see some european leaders stand up for Europe's values.

Of course, that too! But on top of that, the pretext was that they should gain computer skills, but all they are taught is to navigate the horror show of the microsoft ecosystem
Hmmm, i think more people should read the SF classic : Wasp...
Terrorism only needs a single oppurtunity.
And what is more, kids actually learn better when they write with pen and study from real books.

We currently have company wide training sessions for microsoft software... word, excel teams etc. so it still happens today. IT found out that we were not using these tools effectively and thus pushed for it. Why else pay a lot to microsoft?
I’ve been thinking about how to find R packages by functionality when you don’t already know the package name.
So over the holidays, Claude Code and I built The Warehouse: a functionality-first R package directory that helps you find packages by what they do.

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Oh my, that was hidden deep in my memories.
It is January and frosty in Berlin, but big black flies still come out to enjoy the sun on the outside of our building.
This is very sad news

So Trumps Greenland dreams, could help Putin with Ukraine... sounds reasonable to me.
And here we are: the entire transatlantic alliance is now talking about Greenland, instead of talking about ending the war in Ukraine.
