I do want to offer one counterpoint about Bama. BYU moved down after getting beaten in a conference championship rematch that they also lost in the regular season. Bama lost a game that it won in the regular season. It’s not pure apples-to-apples.

I’m not sure it was “Georgia fans rooting against the SEC Championship” and more “Georgia fans are fine if we don’t go.” Obviously hindsight being 20-20, it more than worked out. Indiana was the worst team in college football for 150 years and then they let you start paying players and they immediately became No. 1 and the only conclusion one can draw is they were the only ones who didn’t realize you could pay players under the table for the first 150 years.
