Sad news about Dickie Bird. I was lucky enough to meet him in June at the Mayor of Barnsley’s Civic Service. He was warm, kind and full of character.

A true legend of cricket and a proud son of Barnsley who never forgot his roots. Rest in peace, Dickie.

The Mayoress and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at Armthorpe Community Centre with Markham Main Colliery Band’s Last Night of the Proms. A fantastic atmosphere, full of music, flags and community spirit. Thank you to all who made it such a special night. 🎶🇬🇧

This morning I had the honour of leading Doncaster’s remembrance for the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day in Sir Nigel Gresley Square.
Pipers played the Lament as the VJ flag was raised, followed by a 2 minute silence at noon to mark the end of the Second World War in the Far East.
We will remember them.

It was an honour to play a part in the presentation of the British Empire Medal to Richard Haley at Doncaster Mansion House.
My thanks to Professor Dame Hilary Chapman DBE, Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, for presenting the award, & congratulations to Richard on this well deserved recognition.

Attended Armthorpe’s 80th anniversary VE Day commemoration this evening with Sally Jameson MP. A dignified and moving event, with music, reflection, and the lighting of the beacon at Markham Main Memorial Garden. Grateful to all involved in organising it.
