Interior photo of bobzbay books. There are bookshelves on both sides of a hallway.
Our weekend sales are… substantially lower than last year, and I know we’re not the only indie bookstore that’s struggling this year.
Find your local indie and buy something small if you can, 2025 is going to be /a year/ for many of us.
When we initially came up with the theme a few months ago, I figured I’d find a book with some sort of elaborate mystical competition, Now leaning towards a comfort reread of @ngoziu.bsky.social’s Check, Please.
Foolishly decided to do the extremely broad ‘games’ for this month’s book club theme & have now entered decision paralysis.
Guy: Wow—a bookshop—don’t see those much anymore. No one reads. Decline of society!
Me: Can I help you find something or make a recommendation?
Guy: I don’t buy books, no time.
I feel like in a general book store or library you start with fiction as a more general concept, then separate out the weird genres. But we're mostly the weird ones, so it seems like we should specify when they're not. I don't know, 'Set in the real world'? 'Adheres to the laws of physics'?
Re-categorizing the comics/graphic novels recently:
Crista: What's the thing where it's fictional, but in the real world?
Maura: Uhh.........I guess we could just call it fiction?
‘The holidays are coming up, we should make sure to reorder that weird demon book’ just some normal business chat
Just saw someone recommend JUST LIKE HOME to someone seeking "sincere father-daughter stories" and this feels like a very letter of the law situation to me
While I was kinda hoping the influx was down to the Hocus Pocus themed drag show happening in town later, turns out a collage librarian brought a van load of students on Western Mass bookshop crawl! Librarians remain the best.
Now there are 10 of them...
Me: Ah, the afternoon lull, off to pick up my lunch order from the coffee shop on the corner!
*starts writing "back in 2 min. sign*
*3 people come into the shop as if summoned*
Best part of tonight’s book club was definitely 5 of us getting to explain @chucktingle.bsky.social’s career trajectory to the one person who had never heard of him. Truly joyous.
Customer: *gestures to group* As you can probably tell, most of us are queer.
Obviously we talked about robots
