The super rich have built political power by buying politics, investing in legitimizing elite power (dominating press+AI) and directly accessing institutions.

Great morning presenting at the Yale University Global Justice Conference. Huge thanks to Thomas Pogge and the organizers for facilitating this global dialogue

Proud to have contributed to the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council
📢 The welfare state is under pressure globally. Cuts to social services are rising while 2 billion people live without protection.
From poverty, inequality to #ClimateChange + migration, can #WSSD2 in Doha this Nov tackle the biggest challenges of our time?

A large, diverse crowd of protesters gathers beneath las Setas in Seville, Spain, holding colorful signs and banners advocating for economic justice, climate action, and global equity. Prominent signs include messages like "Dignity Not Debt" and "Global Economic Justice Now." A large inflatable globe is also visible. Overlaid at the top of the image is bold white text reading: "FfD4: JOB NOT DONE!"
#FfD4 is far from the milestone for global economic governance reform it could have been.
For #CivilSociety, it's clear that the job is not done. We need real reform, not a watered-down consensus.

"A document that examines in detail the foreign and domestic, public and private resources that could finance development does not consider, not even once, the most important institution of public money creation: the central bank."
NEW by @danielagabor.bsky.social, third dispatch from FfD4.
Back from the disappointing UN Conference on Financing for Development #FfD4, with 50+ heads of state, high-level participants +6,000 private sector participants/lobbyists. The outcome doesn't have the level of ambition needed for current crises; often it perpetuates structural problems

1/ After nearly 3 years of research, our @hrw.org report "The Gig Trap" is finally out. It documents how companies like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, Shipt, Favor, and Amazon Flex created a business model that undermines labor rights & deepens inequality in the US. A 🧵https://hrw.org/node/391214
Instead of building schools and hospitals, billions in public funds from Africa vanish into offshore accounts, luxury real estate and shell companies.
We have analysed 78 cases, revealing where stolen funds end up. Check it out! ⬇️ https://buff.ly/3BoJPZ0
Why wouldn't we want multinational corporations to pay their share of taxes? It's mind-boggling. #FfD4
For a decade, we've been told blended finance would turn "billions into trillions." The reality? Just $15 billion annually—less than 0.4% of the $4 trillion needed for SDGs.

We can’t ignore the human rights impacts of budget cuts & austerity.
As Attiya Waris put it: “There’s blood on the budget lines.”

The G7’s decision to let US multinationals off the hook weakens even that the modest floor of a 15% global tax and sends the wrong message to the rest of the world. A @projectsyndicate.bsky.social piece with @jayatighosh.bsky.social and Jose Antonio Ocampo. www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/g...
Powerful @endausterity.bsky.social panel at #FFD4 on alternatives to budget cuts for investing in universal social protection & public services.
The most common austerity measure? Slashing social protection—replacing universal programs w narrow, means-tested safety nets. @isabelortiz.bsky.social
It was a great privilege to present our Jubilee Report on Sovereign Debt findings and recommendations to Cardinal Parolin. We look forward to the work we will continue to do to redesign global debt architecture. Countries must be able to strengthen critical areas like health and education.
Countries are hobbled by debt, funneling money to creditors instead of to health, education or infrastructure. @josephestiglitz.bsky.social and @martinguzman.bsky.social headed a Jubilee Commission report that suggests remedies. Worth a read or a watch
We exposes the illusion of consensus at the #FfD4 conference where multilateralism was not saved, but sanitized.
