Consultation on the Code of Conduct for nurses
Just a reminder, the Nursing Council consultation on the new draft code of conduct closes tomorrow.
You can submit easily by saying you totally support the new draft - you don't need to say anything more than that. That's what my submission says.

This is my weekly call for coffee tips.
They really make it easier for me to focus on my work at Rights Aotearoa.
If you can help out, I really appreciate it.

The Centre-Left bloc could form a Government, but with the finest possible margin according to the latest Taxpayers' Union-Curia Poll.
This poll shows Labour gain 0.3 points to 34.4 percent, while National drops 2.9 points to 28.4 percent.
The Greens gain 0.2 points to 10.5 percent, while New Zealand First drops 0.8 points to 9.7 percent. ACT gains 0.8 points to 7.5 percent, while Te Pāti Māori gains 0.3 points to 3.2 percent.
And here it is.

I am hearing rumours of a National Party coup attempt. Yes, actually, not just a random comment designed for engagement bait.

Left wing politicians need to offer hope, material improvement and a reason to vote for, not just against to voters. They must also master the art of saying "get a load of this fucken guy" about their right wing opponents, many of whom fail to pass the uncanny valley test.

I haven't asked for any coffee tips for a couple of months - but I could really do with topping up my financial reserves so I can focus on running Rights Aotearoa. I have had lots of expenses recently.
If you can contribute, I would be so grateful. Details below.

I just wrote to the Medical Council in support of their draft statements on Hauora Māori, and Cultural Competence and Cultural Safety. I also urged them to ignore Todd Stephenson's letter.

So that leaves the open question: when will the validity of the Crown Law 2006 opinion be addressed by a court of competent jurisdiction?
I have a guess, but I won't say it publicly.

So where does this leave the status of trans people under the HRA 1993. Well, it leaves everyone at the mercy of the untested Crown Law 2006 opinion.
Based on my informed understanding of submissions, the HRRT in LAVA v Wellington Pride won't need to address the Crown Law 2006 opinion.

Yesterday, Goldsmith said that the justice portfolio had more pressing priorities than implementing the recommendations of the Law Commission's Ia Tangata report.
This wasn't breaking news to me as he signalled this in a letter to me last year.

Hearings
Oral submission hearing dates and information for the People's Select Committee on Pay Equity. Watch recordings from August, September, and October hearings.
The Report of the People's Select Committee on Pay Equity is out! And utterly damning of the Government.
I am feeling super proud that Rights Aotearoa's written and oral submissions are quoted extensively.

The global enemies of human rights are on the ascendancy right now.
It’s easy to get despondent.
But we can’t give up.
We have to hold the line because human rights are non-negotiable.
These posts are for my own motivation just as much as yours!
I really need your support in this fight!

There are no foundational human rights, but bodily autonomy and respect for it is a concept which underlies many human rights.
We have to defend all the human rights based on top of bodily autonomy vigorously.
Trans rights are not negotiable as we must stand firm on bodily autonomy.

A very close family friend (my second mother almost) is a midwife who instilled in me a deep respect for women’s reproductive rights.
Attacks on trans people’s bodily autonomy are putting in place the foundations for a full-scale attack on reproductive rights for all. It’s a bigger goal.

Anyway, NZ First introduced a new member’s bill, so they will have to withdraw one of these - place your bets on which one get axed!

If I were a member of parliament I’d introduce a member’s bill saying that Winston Peters can’t keep introducing, removing, and reintroducing members bill’s like they’re trashy soap opera characters

Thanks for the kind words @mountaintui.bsky.social . No, a NZBORA declaration of inconsistency is not binding on the Government, unfortunately - that needs to change.

It's a big ask! And it would have to be fundraised quickly as we would need to get the hearing down in time for a judgment before the election.
Anyway, I am resigned to it not happening, just very annoyed I can't do these big things. There is only so much pro bono resource you can ask for!

It would need 100k+ in legal fees. It would be at least a 3 or 4-day hearing, with a couple of interlocutory filings at least. Could easily expand to closer to 200-250k.

I am so annoyed that I don't have the resources to do a NZBORA declaration of inconsistency challenge on the Government's voting changes.
It would be a hefty undertaking, not a relatively uncomplicated action like my Goldsmith one.
The changes are highly antithetical to our human rights.

Don't play their game on their pitch using their rules, you literally cannot win in any way that is meaningful because they fundamentally do not care about your ideas, thoughts, position or argument. It's all self promotional right wing glysophate towards free speech.
