Not my design ๐ The only version of these I've seen marketed is the Buerkle Vampire, but it's limited to 5 m depth. I've previously used hand crank Ace/Jack Rabbit peristaltic pumps for deep mid-lake sampling, but unfortunately they've been discontinued. I'm interested in any alternatives!

Hi Bluesky microbiology/limnology/hydrology/field folks!
Has anyone used this style of cordless drill peristaltic pump for sample collection or field filtration?
The design checks a lot of our boxes (replaceable tubing, decent suction height, compact batteries), but doesn't seem widely available.

It was wonderful to attend the Polar and Alpine Microbiology Conference in Copenhagen last week and discuss my aerobiology project from Summit Station, Greenland. Thank you @alexanesio.bsky.social for organizing #PAM2026

The pre-filled, screwtop Zymo Shield Lysis/Collection Tubes can be convenient and come w or w/o beads (#R1103 'Microbe' has 0.1 & 0.5 mm). FWIW regarding extraction, Zymo said Shield has greater lytic properties than Zymo Lysis Solution, and that Shield deactivates lysozyme but not Proteinase K.

This was the second documented polar bear at Summit. There's a NatGeo article about the 2018 incident. EGRIP also had a bear in 2016, and mother/cub tracks nearby in 2024. In emailing with @aederocher.bsky.social about the bear's behavior, he said overland movements are actually pretty common

Dr. Margaret Oakley Dayhoff
I took biochem in 2001, and for nearly 20 years read amino acid sequences dailyโฆ and I never knew Dayhoff named them or even the logic behind things like Q until last Friday (h/t Mike Janech). Also, this is another big Dayhoff moment for me. She was incredible!

I just received this cool piece of Greenlandic history. Rasmussen and Freuchen minted these coins in 1910 as a currency for their Thule Trading Station at Cape York #Arctic #Greenland

Polar bear sightings far inland on the GrIS are rare. Thankfully (and amazingly) the bear showed little interest while passing through camp and carried on upwind over the horizon. Everyone is safe, wind direction has been consistent, and we're maintaining a 24-hour watch. 3/3

I discovered this just minutes after finishing when I made an unplanned stop at an elevated atmospheric monitoring station.
My head's always on a swivel here, but I have a new appreciation for how difficult it is to spot a bear even in clear conditions. 2/3

Field work in my final week at Summit Station, #Greenland ended with an unsettling surprise yesterday. Unbeknownst to me, a #polarbear was approaching from directly downwind while I was sampling snow south of station. 1/3
