Work is work. It should be kept professional. Your suspicion being set off by what your boss says is spot on.
Love can mean many things. A friendship type of love, family love, romantic love, obsessive love(like hobbies). To express love, you must spend your time and energy on someone or something because you choose to. Holding a high bar means you're careful with how you spend your time and energy.
