I always make them do homework by hand since this is the best way for them to learn. In the past, students who did the homework well learned the material well. This has changed dramatically just in the past year.

For fun, one of those two plots is actual student data- each point is the HW & quiz average of a single student. The other plot is decoupled per-student and randomized to intentionally destroy any correlation. Can you tell the difference?
Two plots of homework scores vs quiz scores, showing no correlation
Concerned my calc 2 students are using AI to do all their homeworks, since the ones getting great HW scores do terribly on the quiz given in-class the next day.
Scatterplot of HW scores vs quiz scores shows no discernable correlation.
List of main films in the "Curt and Curteous" series.
Some days I have productive research shower thoughts. Other days:
Picture of a guy standing next to a weird tall abacus-like thing.
Looking at a mathematical gadget on Amazon, and the product page shows this picture. (It is not a picture of what I'm trying to buy.)
Is this a real thing? I'm guessing the picture is AI generated, but I still want one to gesture near.
Spotted at the goodwill: a SCM βTypewriter Ribbon Cartridgeβ in the original box! #didntgetit
I love the design! Impossible to mechanically lose track of the count, easy to "read" just by how it feels on your hand. Hard to move from one position to another, but that's kinda the point. You can pick up the ball, get knocked over, nothing's gunna mess it up.
A US football "down indicator"- wrist strap with a loop around a finger
I learned from a YouTube comment about this thing- the Down Indicator used in US football. Very interesting! Do football fans recognize this? You loop the thing around different fingers to keep track of what down it is (out of 4).

I recently filmed a bunch of stuff with THE Victor from THE Victor Company! Here's the first post on his TikTok- lots more clips to come, and maybe a longer cut that I'll put on my youtube channel too. www.tiktok.com/@victors_op_...
a cartoon drawing of Thufir Hawat with duodecimal (6+2 beads) abacus
Thufir Hawat with duodecimal abacus! Art by Jason Yungbluth.
I don't think duodecimal is used in the books but it's a great touch

Is this a generational thing? I am a phone battery miser. If Iβm sitting somewhere (plane, car) with a plug, I plug it in. I plug it at 75%, at 90%, at 100%. My teen kids will be sitting at 50% and say βI donβt need it yetβ.
Is it just me? Just them?
It even has a little logo in the lower right which is pixelated. Maybe fake too? Strange

Picture of an Otis King Calculator with the word TUBE
Somebody ripped off my Otis King Calculator video, but at least their version has this great thumbnail #tube
a web form which requires me to enter today's date
Worst web form ever. I honestly have a hard time believing this is real. (it is)
Just got an email soliciting papers for a "first class international journal" which promises full peer review within 24 hours, full publication within 48 hours!
(yes it is author-pay)
Just got a college-wide email from the Dean which included 5 paragraphs. 2 different fonts were used, and 4 different font sizes. Am I the only one who takes umbrage at this?
"Paste and match style" is there for a reason!
(or yknow just write your emails yourself)
A browser popup saying: Use of Al in peer review To protect authors' rights and research confidentiality, this journal does not currently allow the use of Generative AI or Al-assisted technologies such as ChatGPT or similar services for peer review (see our GenAI reviewer policy). We are actively evaluating compliant Al tools and may revise this policy in the future.
I just agreed to referee a journal article, and before I was allowed to see the article they showed me this notice:
"This journal does not currently allow the use of Generative AI or Al-assisted technologies for peer review."
First time I've seen something like this- it's good I think!

This is a standup show- maybe it is somehow picking up crowd noise and subtitling it?
Screenshot of a Tubi stream where the subtitles say βQuinnβ over and over, covering the whole screen
Tubi subtitles are having a real one
Still grateful for when Christie's Auction House presented me with the original Pascaline calculator. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you Christie!
This article, under "Notations and conventions", still acts like z-up is the standard. It mentions different 2d conventions in CS, but doesn't even metion 3d y-up systems.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesi...
I know tikz 3D uses βy-upβ. Is it a USA vs Europe thing? Math vs CS?
My high schooler reports that all the students objected when the teacher presented 3D-coordinates with z pointing βupβ. The teacher was shocked that they would do it any other way. The kids all agreed that y-up is far more natural, since thatβs how they do it in Minecraft.
