When Sam Hirst teaches Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel Wuthering Heights, they often find the students who end up hating it are the ones who expect it to be a love story.

Last year, I was constantly worried about my TN work visa being revoked. I could also be rejected by a CBP officer any time I re-entered the US, so my immigration lawyer advised no travel. After I was laid off, I had only 60 days to find a new job or I had to physically leave the US by December 31.

Victorian Era Christmas card featuring a mouse riding a lobster
All I want for Christmas is…a painting of a mouse riding a lobster.
Christmas cards during the Victorian Era tended to be rather unusual, reflecting an offbeat sense of humor before Christmas iconography had solidified into what it is today.
Let’s shake this tree down. 🧵⬇️

Headline: ProPublica management wants 100% discretion over when and how to use AI Supplementary text: The organization rejected our proposal that ensures staff will not be replaced by AI and requires labeling AI-generated content
1/ At bargaining yesterday, @propublica.org management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.
Word of the year: SLOP! @merriam-webster.com
"Like slime, sludge, and muck, slop has the wet sound of something you don't want to touch. Slop oozes into everything."
We could not agree more. Keep AI slop out of our news! #NewsNotSlop

Vintage 1920 advertisement showing Santa Claus reclining against a brick chimney, smoking a cigarette. He wears a red suit and black boots, with a night sky and evergreen branches in the background. A pack of Murad “The Turkish Cigarette” peeks out of his sack of presents with holly and wrapped gifts. Large text at the top reads “MURAD THE TURKISH CIGARETTE,” and smaller text at the bottom reads, “What could you enjoy more this Xmas than Murad?”
🧵 It’s the holiday season. Santa Claus is an icon of that history, but he wasn’t always reaching for a soda. 🎅

It essentially does look like enhanced tax credits will expire December 31, which sucks. People need to sign up for plans by Monday, and many may "choose" to be underinsured because that's what they can afford.
New from me at @motherjones.com: Senate Republicans blocked the Democratic plan to extend ACA tax credits while trying to pass (and failing too) health saving accounts plans, which @mirandayaver.bsky.social told me, are not useful for poor and middle-class folks. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

"Although the U.S. certainly still has gradations of belonging, the Fourteenth Amendment’s birthright citizenship clause’s broad inclusivity is well-established and indisputable, and it should be a point of national pride, which represents Americans’ commitment to a multi-racial democracy."
Read and share the Caucus of Nonprofit Newsroom Unions' position statement, which FSP-NWU endorses to represent our members who freelance for these companies, and sign the NewsGuild-CWA’s petition on AI. And if you are a freelance worker, join NWU in the fight for #NewsNotSlop!
FSP-NWU has developing AI contract language for freelancers and fighting for fair legislation that regulates the use of our work by AI companies. Now, our NewsGuild-CWA siblings are fighting to ensure that AI is regulated in their newsrooms. Sign the petition here: actionnetwork.org/petitions/st...
For-profit media companies have already haphazardly rolled out deeply flawed AI tools that publish inaccurate articles and are used as an excuse for executives to slash freelance budgets and lay off our peers in the industry. Nonprofit outlets can and must do better to preserve trust in news.
A graphic logo in the shape of a circle with a blue background. Around the edges of the circle is white text that reads "Caucus of Nonprofit Newsroom Unions." In the middle of the logo is the text of the acronym, CNNU, with each letter inside of a large, stylized quotation mark.
Today, we join unionized nonprofit newsrooms across the country as they stand shoulder-to-shoulder to demand that news industry leaders agree to common-sense guardrails around the implementation of artificial intelligence to protect the integrity, quality, and accuracy of our journalism.

For @motherjones.com, I wrote about what's at stake for chronically ill contractors and freelancers as Affordable Care Act enhanced tax credits expire.

“'Librarians out in our branches are seeing a lot of young people who are really excited by these collections,' Langlais told 404 Media. 'Folks who are coming in just for the games are picking up program flyers and coming back for something like that.'"
But he sent us back to the table to bargain with POLITICO over an appropriate remedy.

We WON that case. The neutral arbiter said AI may generate content more quickly than a human can write, but that's no substitute for critical safeguards like fact-checking. 7/

Last year @politico.com used AI to generate coverage of major political events. They also currently let subscribers generate AI-written reports on any subject. But the reports are often riddled with errors, and there's no human to fact-check them. 3/
