I know this feels pointless but everyone has to call their congressional reps and say they oppose war with Iran and they oppose Trump illegally starting one without congressional approval β€” both

5 Calls can help you make the call:

An underreported factor in Manhattan's retail problems. Fewer residents in the Village to support local shops = fewer shops aimed at locals.

I think that's right.

I think membership in the NBCC always only required three reviews in a year to join, and once you were in, you were in.

And I'm not sure how many people have noticed this, since not many people get the physical NYT anymore (except me), but the three staff critics run in the Book Review now, not in the daily paper. There are no book reviews in the weekday arts section. It does make me slightly worried...

Sam kindly replied elsewhere on this thread to say that he isn't on staff at the Journal, alas.

I don't think Sam Sacks is on staff at the WSJ, but I'm not sure. And the last I heard, that's how it works at The New Yorker. Staff writers are all on contract with no benefits.

She hasn't had a piece in New York mag since last summer, but I don't think that was a staff job anyway. Though I'm not sure.

Dwight, Jen Szalai, Alexandra Jacobs. Is there anyone else? New Yorker staff writers don't get benefits, afaik.

Inserting periods that don't appear after the words "Dr" or "Mr" are one change I allow in quotes, because otherwise everyone is just going to think we have a typo.

Hi, Laura!

The program was ended a year or two later, because Pew's funding priorities changed. And as it becomes harder to find a place to do either of themβ€”look at Washingtonβ€”it's clearer than ever how interdependent the worlds of art and arts journalism is.

the Inquirer and the Daily News, two alternative weeklies, and WHYY, as well as executives from the (then-new) Kimmel Center, the art museum, a theater and an arts festival. Reading it now makes me want to weep.

The NAJP was an amazing program that gave mid-career arts journalists the opportunity to spend a year at Columbia studying, and also learning from each other. The year I was there, we put together a study on news coverage of the arts around the country. I went to Philly and met with journalists at

organizations, and so they asked the arts organizations themselves what would be helpful, and they said to support arts journalists. Because the arts journalists educate the audiences. No audiences, no artists.

In 2003, I had a fellowship at the Columbia Journalism School as part of the National Arts Journalism Program (RIP). The program was funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, becauseβ€”and this is my memory from a long time ago but I think it's pretty accurateβ€”they were looking for a way to support arts...

I heard Namwali Serpell speak at a Doubleday event a few months ago and I wanted to check back into college so I could sign up for her Morrison class. It sounded amazing. (Not that I went to that college where she teaches!)

With the Times reviewing fewer books every week, too, this is absolutely devastating.
