As the federal gov attempts to decimate much-needed programs, we more than ever need to not only protect our ability to get citizen-led initiatives on state ballots, but also ensure that politicians do not undermine the democratic will of the people they purport to represent once measures pass.
When I'm asked why I have hope that the progressive policies I report on in my book *Another World Is Possible* have a fighting chance in the US, I point to these sort of egalitarian/redistributive citizen-led initiatives, which, Ben Case writes, pass 75% of the time: jacobin.com/2025/05/sand...
If you live in states like Missouri, Alaska, Nebraska and others that passed progressive measures like paid sick leave through citizen-led initiatives, beware of how Republicans are actively undermining / dismantling this form of direct democracy:

THIS is what I mean when I say over and over again Americans are getting a bad deal. In the wealthiest country in the history of the planet, how is it that 2/3 of the population can't afford to get by?!
(I say he--but obviously Mujica did not do this alone, as I clearly outline in the excerpt. He was, however, instrumental.)
While, of course, Harris did not have the opportunity to put the key lesson in this article into practice, it's something the center-left in both the US and UK still desperately need to learn.
