Compare it to sports. Being a pro player is mostly boring (training, working out), and players can lose without being a villain. Every kung fu movie has a training montage. Every science movie should have something equivalent.

Currently sitting in a parking lot (waiting). A nearby car's alarm has been going off continuously for the better part of an hour. No one cares.

Seems on point.

Mistakes engineers make in large established codebases What I've learned from ten years working on projects like this

I thought this article was very insightful for #programming in general, but also for scientific computing and #HPC 🔭⚛️🧪

American TV shows based on foreign ones should have one episode, in season 2, where they meet the foreign show. Just, like, that whole cast shows up in character for a team-up.

So when a health insurance company (or any other company or person ftm) says “it’s an AI deciding this” what they really say is “our executive leadership deliberately choose to let an AI decide they fully know is fundamentally flawed”.

It always comes back to Weizenbaum’s book from 50 years ago.

I walked our dog yesterday night (on a leash). I saw a Smelly Cat (*) at the side of the road, and so did the dog. He yanked the leash, the cat ran away, and we were engulfed in the smell.

At home it turned out that the dog was completely clean (the wife confirmed), but I wasn't...

50 years of tax cuts for the rich failed to trickle down, economics study says Tax cuts for the wealthy didn't boost the economies of the U.S. and 17 other countries — but they did worsen income inequality.

Britische Forscher haben herausgefunden, dass Steuersenkungen für Reiche keinen (Trickle-Down-) Effekt auf den Wohlstand eines Landes haben. Die Reichen werden lediglich reicher und die Ungleichheit steigt.
