Friends, we need to set the bar higher than this.
The way my brain just went "Novacaaaiiine for the soul"
www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... from @quercus62.bsky.social (ok just read the intro so far, unsure when I'll get to the rest, but so far it's very cool!!)
I teach this in my undergrad genetics class (although students don't read the paper) -- the figures are great: Xin Yi et al. ,Sequencing of 50 Human Exomes Reveals Adaptation to High Altitude.Science329,75-78(2010).DOI:10.1126/science.1190371
New work from the lab: Miles @milesroberts.bsky.social tried out machine learning to estimate sweep times to fixation and (spoilers) it didn't really help www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... As always, we'd appreciate any feedback!
Summary statistics and approximate bayesian computation are comparable to convolutional neural networks for inferring times to fixation https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.02.17.706432v1
Can't believe I'm missing this by one day!!!!
Crop scientists have long recognized that reproduction is going to be the first point of failure for plants with rising global temperatures. However, this has often been overlooked by those studying natural populations. In this new review, we try to change that. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...
We've had fun discussing these ideas over the last few months and would really appreciate any feedback.
Hey @derekdenney.bsky.social & Annabelle Taylor wrote a nice essay about why we should care about plant reproduction + heat. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...
Also one of them is 44??? And he's so happy 😍
If you are upset about the WP layoffs and the billionaire takeover of the press, consider cancelling your Amazon Prime membership and stop giving them so much business. It took us a while to adjust from the convenience of it when we quit but it was worth it.
“We had to deliver them to a detention center,” principal Jason Kuhlman said about the second grader and fifth grader.
I joined an anti-ICE protest on a bridge today in East Lansing. There were ~10 of us, some who just saw and joined in like me. We got so many supportive honks, waves, & 👍s and also someone gave us donuts!
Character displacement!
Anti- Batesian mimicry?
💯 it feels very jarring to be so happy & having so much fun with my preschooler, and then like everything else.
Cool new work from Sophie Buysee w/ @jeffreykconner.bsky.social on how different Arabidopsis thaliana populations respond to drought.
There's also one where all the various spidermen and other marvel characters are kids, who can also turn into dinosaurs. It's amazing.
Context dependence shapes the evolution of glyphosate and herbivory resistance in Ipomoea purpurea https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2025.12.20.695696v1
I get one lecture for this in my genetics class and do mutation -> migration -> drift -> selection. I start with mutation because that's where all variation starts & spend the most time on drift. My students have already learned HWE so I skip it.
Or even Uber/Lyft. Growing up, my neighbors and my parents would always give each other rides to the airport, but I'd never ask my current neighbors for this when I could take an Uber.
Also that you don't need a community -- why ask a friend for help with code or grammar or paper suggestions etc when you can just consume this product?
Anyway, here's some R code to do this properly if it helps anyone: github.com/emjosephs/te...
Seriously. At least the scantron-scanning office (I love them) has figured out how to generate a csv that can be downloaded and immediately uploaded to the next system.
It's wild to me that the official instructions for getting grades from MSU's course management system to the registrar website involves sorting two spreadsheets, copy-pasting a column from one to the other, and I guess, crossing your fingers it all worked?
