1 of my GIS Profs started class with "Well, the fed roles you were probably counting on applying to when you finish are gone and not coming back, but here's an internship to map Pikes Peak this summer for $15/hr"
Should I be scrambling to reorient my schooling? is there a future in #GIS in the US?

How can long-term #ecology studies survive & resist political & social change, authoritarianism, war, but also embrace positive change?
The BiaΕowieΕΌa Forest as an example of the resilience of long-term studies in a changing world:

This is a venn diagram showing how 69 Trump actions map onto domains covering: undermining democratic institutions; suppressing dissent and media; dismantling social protections; attacking science and education; destabilising the global order. A table version is available here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LZN7QnbSyFfUZJG8Sn1MWpK0VnfBtb0OSyZ1jxP3xBk/edit?usp=sharing
π§΅"So this is how liberty dies..."
Trumpβs first 3 weeks have been a relentless flood of actions. It's incredibly hard to keep up.
Iβve gone through 69 actions & mapped out the pattern - showing how they fall within 5 broad domains consistent with authoritarian states 1/9
I grew up on Maui, and now live on the Front Range. Your photos from back home give me little shots of nostalgia and homesickness. Please never stop.
Maybe someday I will make maps as pretty as this.
MODIS Aqua visible image showing a haze extending from the Po river valley into the west coast of Italy.
Same image from MODIS sensor with added layers of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Angstrom Exponent (AE). The AE is the spectral dependance of the AOD as measured at different bands of MODIS. The AE is typically above 1 in pollution plumes. AE is masked for low values of AOD because at these AOD values, the AE derivation is unreliable.

#pollution from the Po river valley in #Italy today extends into the Adriatic sea.
While there has been #dust clouds from Libya lately, the pollution signatures are clear in the satellite derived Angstrom Exponent, a proxy for aerosol type (typically pollution has high values, blue colors)
I added an interaction when Klarg was alerted to give the party a chance to understand their situation as unwinnable, and thankfully, the players fled.
I've never seen dice treat a party so badly. Attacks WOULD NOT connect. One of the wolves rolled two crits in two rounds against the cleric, who survived only because she used all of her healing on herself to stay alive. I had goblins leave the fight to rouse other forces (to reduce action economy)
Session 1: after defeating the guards outside the cave last session, the party pushed into Cragmaw Hideout. The rogue was too badly injured to continue (the player withdrew from the campaign). The dice gods did not bless the party and they had to withdraw to Phandalin or be destroyed by Klarg!
Colorado Springs will break 1 Million residents in the near future, and rec spaces will need to adapt away from requiring folks who recreate to drive and park to reach them. Another weight on the scale in favor of more robust public transit in the Pikes Peak Region.
Someone once told me to aim for the pain, because that is where the growth is waiting. Maybe your reaction is a clue
Is this your swan song? A "snowflake" sweater tiktok shared on Bluesky? Are these the awkward death throes of the party?
So those folks haven't made it over here yet?
Session 0 was a success! The party departed Neverwinter for Phandalin and ran into some trouble on the way!
I also sheepishly realized my minis deserve better storage than they've been getting since being painted.
I've never seen a government sever goodwill from so many of its constituents so confidently.
Entering my "join the community association" era. There are 600 homes in my neighborhood, and I want everyone who lives here to enjoy the benefits of a tight-knit, place-based community. My first proposal: hand tool refurbishing clinic for gardeners. Sandpaper, linseed oil, files and rags.
NEW: Animation showing how the LA fires have spread over the past 7 days. Near hurricane-force winds are expected later today which firefighters fear could fan the devastating wildfires.

How do we end up with a species name that ends in "whippleanus" and how SHOULD I be pronouncing that word?
Asked some friends if they would play D&D with me in the New Year. Looking forward to the kinds of stories we will tell together.

To what lengths will academics and activists have to go in the coming administration to preserve the efforts of the past and protect the efforts of the present?
When social networks and institutions are compromised, how do we keep from being reduced to "sending a runner" with a handwritten note?
Traditional Ecological Knowledge is science and a critical component of #EcosytemRestoration. Congratulations Dr. Erana Walker, your work is worthy of celebration!!

The world population grew fast over the last 60 years, but farmers grew fruits and vegetables even faster
POV: your truck is 30 yrs old, and you basically share 50/50 custody with the mechanic
In a black and white photo, the skulls of Buffalo are piled at least as high as 5 men, and too wide to see the end of the pile. One man stands at the bottom of the pile with one foot resting on a buffalo skull and one hand leaning against the pile, and another man stands on top of the pile, with a Buffalo skull standing up against his leg.
Things that radicalized me: How Americans nearly destroyed the buffalo to starve the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. Millions of animals killed and left to rot in the name of Manifest Destiny. Today the Great Plains have lost most of their topsoil, once the deepest and richest soil of all.
