As bad as things are right now, the thing that worries me the most is that, while a lot of people in the UK/Europe regard Trump as an aberration, what if what follows him is just as bad if not worse? What if it’s not a horrible blip?
That’s my feeling. The real story here is: ‘to what extent is this a part of an orchestrated campaign to reconfigure attitudes as a means of saving money?’ Publishing the words of an eminent but elderly expert in a premeditated attempt to move the needle on the subject. That’s what’s going on here.
Serious question for Reform supporters: given that you want to vote for the Party of Hate, which of these do you hate the most?:
a) immigrants / foreigners
b) liberal, educated people
c) everyone who isn’t you
d) (secretly) yourself
Tough choice I know, but give it a shot.
Lord Offord
Offord. Declined. The living embodiment of the contempt Reform UK has for Scotland. He looks like a semi-melted Gerry Anderson puppet. No, scratch that, Gerry Anderson puppets are infinitely more believable. He has the face of somebody waiting to have their arse handed to them on a plate.

It’s giving ‘baddie off of Blake’s 7’.
The Witch’s Hat, a poem by Jez Conolly
#WorldBookDay is my flimsy excuse for sharing the poem that I read out at the Granite Noir Crime Writing Festival ‘Into the Dark’ event on 19/3.
Time to obliterate the relentlessly bleak world news with some excellent new music. Share a song that’s been released in the last few weeks that makes you think people are still out there doing great stuff. youtu.be/HsNtkIycfMk?...
You just know, when a traveller returns from a country and calls it ‘an enigma’, they were lucky to get out of it alive.
2) please order a book that you’ve been meaning to buy, but do it through this link:
uk.bookshop.org/shop/somervi...
Somerville Books is my local indie bookshop, and buying through this bookshop.org link will benefit Christie who runs it.
2/2
Tomorrow, Thursday 5 March, is #worldbookday2026, and to mark the occasion, I would like you to do one of two things (or both!):
1) please order a copy of my new book Capture Spiral:
temporalboundary.bigcartel.com/product/capt...
Copies will begin shipping within the next two weeks.

Thank Eryn!
The is cropped up earlier, and is my ‘creature feature’ so let me share the link that’s on YouTube so that more people can have a listen…

Little worm…come say hello…that’s a good boy…ahh look at his tiny face! He’s so cute, isn’t he? Out he comes, all wriggly. Goodness me, you’re so long! You must have been living inside that baby’s head a long time! Out here comes, from the eye socket, and into my mouth he drops!
They’re actually ghosts. I’m convinced. Or made up of what was left in the bag. A bit like the duck billed platypus, which both lays eggs and produces milk, making it the only animal that can make its own custard.
Very good answer.

I’m not going to say spiders, even though I want to, so instead I’m going to say hippopotamus, because they’re kind of a funny shape but they could turn you into a substance resembling lumpy soup with just one bite. Maybe also a slow loris: cute AF but very poisonous teeth!
Yup, ditto
It’s primal. In our lizard brains, they represent death.
A spider in Kaunas, Lithuania
Here’s one I snapped in Lithuania. It was outside the window, fortunately.
I can’t get past them.
Good answer.

Spiders. Because, spiders. Obviously.
It got narrated on the Nocturnal Transmissions podcast, so you can listen to it if you like.

It’s Jez, short for ‘Jez’, I write Prosaic/‘Kitchen Sink’ Horror - so consequently not that much of the natural world creeps in. My horror is mostly about human domesticity. Having said that, my story ‘Special Collections’ is set on the banks of a Scottish loch.
This new documentary is the last word on the film. The got Carpenter and Russell involved, plus all the remaining cast members. Over five hours of Thing goodness! Stop me and buy one!
I should maybe add, I spring originally from the kind of social demographic that accounts for many of these people, so I’m living proof that falling for it is not inevitable. In fact, I feel quite well placed to comment on them.
Studies will be made of these people in the years to come. Perhaps ‘autopsies’ is a better word. I’m interested in their relationship with ‘fiction’, given how much of it they choose to take as fact. Reform and its ilk rely on the blurring of the two, and the acceptance of the result.
Curious bedfellows.
Yes,effectively.
