I posted this on The Other Site, but this was literally what made TV feel like TV. A holdover from the TV show format's origins as a radio play. It was the norm until the early 2010s when prestige cable and streaming subverted it. TV shows were actually much better for it. Limitations make the form.

I wouldn't call "inauthentic," but suspicious. Determining whether that's a force that produced Trump or a force Trump produced is a bit chicken and the egg. But for many people now, especially when it comes to media, the bigger and more austere your organization, the more paranoid it makes people.
