That's a good point, but I think the Corbyn surge showed the value of presenting (rather than identifying) as a working class oriented party.
Plus, those are the voters Labour feels entitled to, which they assume will vote for them regardless of what they do while chasing professional middle class.
I think it is also a matter of identity politics, in the sense that the old "We are a working class party" identity meets the now commonly accepted wisdom (regardless of truthiness) "Working class people are xenophobic".
And instead of challenging that and educating voters, they embrace that idea.
