Reached βRememberβ in my Star Trek Voyager rewatch, an episode I had ironically forgotten; but Iβm glad I was able to watch it with fresh eyes, because god, itβs achingly relevant to today.

Before Academy debuted he said something like "If I like the new series, I'll eat my hat", and I recall him referring to season 1 episode 1 of PIC as "Dumping on childhood memories"; I think he's going in looking for things to be upset by rather than judging them on their own merits.

Nothing like going to attend one of your favourite streamers' streams and they're talking about how Nintendo hasn't announced anything for Zelda's 40th anniversary and their main Mod says "Given what we got for Star Trek's 60th, maybe you're better off without". π

Star Trek Online screenshot/edit composite: aft/dorsal view of an Okinawa frigate flying away from the camera, banked slightly to port. Blue streaks trail behind it a la "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
Text reads:
"Star Trek Okinawa
Can the Federation's smallest frigate resolve its biggest crisis?"
Tried something a little different to my usual screenshots; editing together a sort of 'What If' movie poster kind of thing.

Screenshot from the 2026 videogame, Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown. An S-shaped corridor snakes off from the Mess Hall into a small private dining room where one table is surrounded by six chairs.
Interesting detail in the Star Trek: Voyager Across the Unknown game is that prior to Neelix converting it into a kitchen, you can actually see the Captain's Dining Room. Its mentioned in VOY that the kitchen was adapted from the Captain's Mess, but it was never seen on screen.

Not trying to accuse them of plagiarism; maybe they do have the rights and there was a miscommunication between the art team and the flavor-text team. But this would be the first time they've added a non-canon ship, AND its come with this description/model discrepancy, so it does make me wonder.

Promotional artwork for upcoming USS Exeter in Star Trek Timelines, using the design of Star Trek Online's Exeter Class
information popup screenshot from Star Trek Timelines
"U.S.S. Exeter
Super Rare
A Constitution-Class Starfleet vessel that got abandoned after its crew got infected with an unknown disease"
The "Star Trek Timelines" gacha game is adding what is apparently supposed to be the USS Exeter from The Original Series, but is clearly based on the Star Trek Online Exeter Class.
Do they even have rights for this? They've got the Reliant & 1701-F, but those are STO ships that were canonised.

Conversely, DS9 kept references to the Enterprise to an absolute minimum unless it was for the Riker guest appearance or like twice ever for O'Brien & Worf backstory stuff; an understandable way to handle it, but has of course led to jokes about Enterprise's complete absence in the Dominion War.

The occasional name drops of Discovery are a nice touch with SFA. There's something refreshing about having a show that focuses on something other than a major Enterprise or 'hero' ship, but that still acknowledges a familiar name is out there doing its thing without needing it to constantly cameo.

Hilda on The Muppet Show in 2026
Its so cool that the 2026 Muppet Show special brought back Hilda, the Theatre's seamstress. It's her first on-screen appearance since 1984 and her first line of dialogue since 1976! Was always disappointed she got sidelined, a costume-designer is so obvious for a show set in a theatre. #Muppets

screencap from season one of Star Trek: The Next Generation. A human male in a "skant" uniform variant that swaps out trousers for a skirt.
Very minor #StarfleetAcademy spoilers.
In two scenes this week, we see a male character wearing a skirted uniform variant, finally bringing back what TNG attempted in its earliest season with hope to demonstrate the gender equality of the 24th century.
In Academy, its not a background extra either.π«Ά

At first I thought this was an odd choice to include for 32nd century Klingons, but the more I thought about it, the more it /kind of/ makes sense. In a time of diaspora, freighters are probably more useful than warships; and how much does a /freighter/ design really need to evolve over time?

I've often struggled with the way Klingons have been worldbuilt on Star Trek. They're often pigeonholed into *such* a cartoonish warrior archetype that I struggle to engage. There have only been seven Klingon-centric stories that I've resonated with.
There are now eight. π

I never liked the 'neck' section on the Hoover; probably because I'm used to seeing similar ships like the Nebula just bolt the engineering section straight onto the saucer. But I like how, by recontextualising it into a tug, your version's neck is justified to allow clearance for the container.

star trek subreddits have been so tiresome the last ten days. Everyone seems to have a galaxy-brain take on why modern star trek is "objectively" bad, and it always boils down to "I can't believe it's not the 1990s any more". I'd happily have these discussions if they were actually in good faith.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I suppose its possible that some studios may have been requesting their shows be made in ultrawide in some sort of deal to sell sets, a bit like content being made to sell 3D TVs, or how some shows, Star Trek included, were used to sell colour sets back in the day.

I've been assuming the aspect ratio has been getting narrower because modern TVs are also getting made with more theatrical aspect ratios, but I'm a bit out of the loop in that regard. Also glad to see a return to 16:9.

This week's Starfleet Academy wasn't quite to my tastes, and that's fine; as long as they're not doing anything massively problematic, it doesn't need to *all* appeal.
Even then, this episode still has a handful of very solid moments and character beats.

I've been so scared the past few weeks, that I've found myself dissociating to a point where I'm in denial. The Ice stuff, the Greenland situation, the corporations (& bootlickers) wanting to replace artists with AI, the anti-trans legislations. How can this possibly be the real world?
