Bruce Campbell on Death, Dying, and DIYing His New Movie Ernie & Emma
I can't be the guy lugging around a chainsaw anymore.
If you haven’t heard about Bruce Campbell’s latest film, it’s likely because he’s been distributing it himself. The Evil Dead star wrote, directed, and stars in Ernie & Emma, a thoughtful, heartwarming story about a man on a quest through grief who finds more than a few laughs along the way. 1/2

A judge in a courtroom

Yesterday was my last day at Willamette Week. I accomplished a lot to be proud of* but I'm crushed. WW was my dream job and I lived it. Losing this beyond my control or fault is hard. Taking the weekend to breathe and grieve. I will miss the team a lot. (Birthday Tuesday, job loss Thursday is rough)

You can buy tickets for this Portland music festival now, priced between $125 and $500.
But just two months out, Soundscape Northwest only has a few venues on board, and it's missing required permits. Vendors and venues say they haven't been paid.

Notorious ‘Proud Boys’ brawler serving 10 years in Oregon prison loses appeal
Alan Swinney had traveled from Texas to join right-wing brawlers in downtown Portland.
Alan Swinney's appeal is heading to the Oregon Supreme Court
His conviction was based on “transferred intent." Essentially, that the Proud Boy had intended to hit one person, but instead struck another
His appeal argues transferred intent doesn't apply to a 2nd-degree assault case

Wife’s sudden death called coincidence — or calculated murder — as unfaithful firefighter’s trial in SW Washington ends
The murder trial against Kevin West, ex-battalion chief at Camas-Washougal Fire, culminated Friday.
The defense attorney, Brian Walker, conceded that he didn’t have a “good explanation” for the death, but suggested the medical examiner had been misled by injuries inflicted during a “deep and firm” massage that the Wests’ 22-year-old son, Ted, gave to his mother on Jan. 7.

I’m at a lunch for landlords (yknow, for research) and the speaker is predicting that rents in Portland will start heading up again in 2026 “as new supply remains constrained”
To the people who do this for a living, cause and effect couldn’t be clearer

(I thought it was really funny and the editor is buying me a drink. We journos work hard and shit happens).

‘A 9-gigawatt problem’: Northwest’s soaring energy demand, supply constraints, could spark new power crisis
Data centers are straining electricity supplies even as Oregon tries to switch to renewable power. That’s put the grid’s reliability in doubt.
Oregon had just begun to reap the benefits of leaps in energy efficiency and imagine a future where little or none of its electricity came from fossil fuels.
Then came data centers, and extreme weather.
Now the state faces a new energy crisis. @rogoway.bsky.social reports in the first of a series:

One issue in our first contract negotiation is compensation. OPB hasn't given us a proposal that addresses our concerns. Many of us struggle to make ends meet. Our current pay doesn't help alleviate the challenges we face. In the coming weeks, we’ll share more about the struggle our creators face.
