LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson

LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG®, FASG, earned a BA from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and both a Law degree and a Master of Laws degree from New York University. After a 35-year career as a tax lawyer she retired from a partner-level position at EY (Ernst & Young) in 2013 and became a full-time genealogist. Her research centers on African American families that survived slavery. She obtained the Certified Genealogist® credential in 2015 and served the Board for Certification of Genealogists® as a trustee, treasurer, and as President from 2019–2022. In 2021 LaBrenda was elected as the 170th Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists (ASG), the field’s honorary scholarly society. In 2025 the Association of Professional Genealogists awarded LaBrenda the Kathleen W. Hinkley Professional Achievement Award that recognizes exemplary professional achievement in the genealogical field.

Tristan L. Tolman, AG is a professional genealogist, author, editor, and publisher. She has a bachelor's degree in Family History and Genealogy from Brigham Young University and is accredited in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic States through ICAPGen. She is the owner of Legacy Family History, Inc., a professional genealogy research firm, and is the lead genealogist for the award-winning television series, Relative Race. Tristan is past president of the Utah Genealogical Association and has served on the ICAPGen Board. She has written curriculum for the Family History degree programs at Brigham Young University and BYU-Idaho. Tristan loves working with clients and specializes in U.S. genealogical research, writing personal and family histories, and preparing genealogical information for publication. She and her husband Blair are the parents of five children.

njs.libraries.rutgers.edu NJS: An Interdisciplinary Journal Summer 2025 The New Jersey Miscount: The 1860 Census and the Accidental Humanization of Enslaved Individuals By Luke Voyles DOI: 10.14713/njs.v1112.362 Abstract: The 1860 census is the only example in U.S. history when the U.S. government systematically recorded the names and ages of enslaved individuals of a state. Because government officials underestimated the number of enslaved people in New Jersey, there was no slave schedule in the state. Therefore, the names of enslaved individuals appeared within the households of their enslavers in the regular 1860 census. The official census statistics only listed 18 individuals as enslaved in 1860, but a close examination of every 1860 census page for New Jersey uncovers 64 names tied to slavery. This essay explores the context behind the census, and how the census accidentally humanized people whom it often marginalized.

Some years ago, I was chatting with a Retropolis reader, a young history student, and I mentioned there were several dozen people enslaved in New Jersey up until the day the 13th Amendment kicked in in December 1865.

The world needs people with ADHD to know they’re not alone.

I wrote this in 2019 to remind myself why I was dragging my ass out of bed at 5:30AM to make ADHD comics before work.
