“When people were asked how many refugees were accepted in Canada in 2018 (during the Roxham Rd. surge), the median answer given by study participants was 256,000. The actual number of refugees accepted by Canada that year was … 49,504. The gap between perception and reality can be staggering.”

Letter of the day: Let's dial up the volume as Bill 21 ruling looms
I'm an EMSB commissioner. Merit and professional opportunity must not be conditional on hiding one's identity.
Quebec’s Bill 21 is sold as “state neutrality,” but in practice it strips citizens of a fundamental liberty: the right to live and serve publicly without abandoning their faith. montrealgazette.com/opinion/lett...

I think this is still an argument for better transit, personally. The piece gets into arguments for and against, but I think one aspect that isn’t talked about is how parking is just not good for city economics. Fewer homes, less tax revenue, utilities cost more per capita, etc.

The CAQ vs. women: Gender equality is under attack in Quebec
Femonationalism has been a cornerstone of the CAQ's right-wing agenda, justifying legislation that undercuts gender equality in Quebec.
It’s easy for the Legault government to claim they’re big fans of gender equality when it suits their narrative, but when women’s groups are begging them to fast-track construction of more women’s shelters, they refuse to allocate the money.”

Having lived here for 30 years, this was inevitable. But to me it also signals how these laws restrict the Québécois from their own freedom of expression. The busses have had that for about twenty years or so. The STM isn’t some bastion of Anglo culture. Francophones likely chose it originally…

Beachclub politique
