The society underestimates human need for a good yarn. I was told to reduce my pre-recorded 45-min lectures into a TikTok version. I refused. Student feedback: among the content I have, my pre-recorded lectures are most valued. Some tell me they even listen to them while jogging in the park :).

A slide with examples of simple (baking a cake), complicated (sending a rocket to the moon), and complex (raising a child) showing the unhelpfulness of rigid protocols and reliance on 'what worked last time' in complex systems.
A slide with wording- For simple things, the key ideas: "standardization, "protocols", simple KPIs: Highly reliable quality is achievable. For higher complexity, key needs: (1)a foundation of structure (including education) and standardized process; And for the unpredictability, we also need (2) data assessments and adaptability.
A slide with wording- Simple: data targets reliability Complicated: data additionally targets coordination Complexity: data supports adaptability. Sometimes signals are small and the need for accuracy is paramount for detection, improvement cycling and learnings.
Truth bombs at #SPICA26. We work in complex systems but we do QI as if it's a simple or merely complicated system. We think we can standardize and protocolise our way out of avoidable harm. But in complex systems what we actually need to support is SAFE ADAPTABILITY.

Yellow bird with black face and red eye, all puffed out and slightly damp.
Let me start a belated thread of Aotearoa New Zealand silvan birds.
To lead things off, a New Zealand Bellbird photographed on Kapiti Island.
If you, like me, are concerned about the direction our country will go if a Trump Tower is built in our country, then join me in objecting! petitions.getup.org.au/petitions/st... @getup.org.au
Wow -that is such a cool idea - I look forward to reading it - good luck with the review process -hope it is very fast!
I am glad to see this research outcome - I am also one of those women, too :).
One of the biggest obstacles to climate action is "second order" bias: we tend to mistakenly assume other people aren't interested in the subject. From a CBC Kids show:
A great book....
is a way to greenwash AI use at a time when environmentally sustainable AI is most needed (and can actually be done). As you are a climate scientist, I look up to you to advocate for stronger efforts to mitigate climate change, even with AI.
so I would ask you to please edit your post to holistically & genuinly examine the environmenal as well as social impacts of AI-supported technologies. Comparing something to 10 minute shower (many people in the world have no clean, runing water) when fressh water resources are declining globally
It is a simple fact that there are about billions of people likely to be using AI + very few will be familiar with prompt engineering to conserve resources as they mine AI for help;
Undoubtedly, AI has great potential, but the AI-related impact on our environment needs to be holistically considered - is not just in terms of water and electricity but also in terms of e-waste and land use, building centres on Indigenous lands (i.e. Chile).
The 2nd Annual Conference of the Asia Pacific Network for Climate Health will be held in Melbourne, Australia, from 30 September to 4 October 2026. Details on registration and abstract submission are available here: apnch.org/first-announ...

Apparently, most N.E. resolutions fail by the 9th of January. Good luck to you though :)
My sincere condolences to the Australian Jewish community following the act of terrorism at Bondi Beach. We must unequivocally condemn this terrorism, stand in solidarity with those affected, and recognise the courageous efforts of those who saved lives.
Prevention is better than a cure. @VicHealth is on the chopping block to achieve short-term 'savings' that end up costing the healthcare and @ausgov a lot more. We have a few organisations focusing on preventing ill health, so it's worth saving this one. Petition: c.org/n9TYTrg4G2
We are finally able to share our launch webinar MCH CARE NETWORK www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9vV...
That is badly needed and appreciated. We work with the poorest communities across Asia-Pacific, and the discord between what is recommended and what is being done is heartbreaking.
What will the group do beyond an article and a report? While I value academic outputs a lot, lately I wonder who we are really writing for? We need more hands-on, on-the-ground work to make an impact on all those affected by this unstoppable beast in real time.
The #Python and #MATLAB Recipes for Earth Sciences books are back in the top 100 at Springer Earth and Environment, the last two editions each. Thank you all for continuing to buy the books, even though they can usually be downloaded from university libraries!
