We’re heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Ann Godoff, Penguin Press’s founder, President, and Editor-in-Chief.

Ann lived by the words of poet Mary Oliver, an author she had worked with for years: “to pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.”

Ann Godoff, a Top Editor and Publisher of Best Sellers, Dies at 76

We're going to hear from bigger writers, better writers, and writers who worked more closely with her, and I will read every one of their stories. I'm so grateful to have been a small part of her big world.

To those of you who have read and enjoyed any of my three books, the reason they wound up in your hands is that in 2004, Ann Godoff, the editing and publishing giant who founded Penguin Press, took a chance on me. She died yesterday at 76. I owe her more than I can say. She changed my life. >

David Brooks laments that literary fiction has been declining in quality, because of its supposed progressivism and "a general loss in confidence and audacity across Western culture." To this, @reproutopia.bsky.social @publicbooks.bsky.social simply asks: "Is the cissexual literary world okay?"

“To Wither in the Same Way We Shall”: Talking Archives, Diseases, and History with Edna Bonhomme - Public Books “The progressive and leftist organizers that I knew before think about three things: educate, organize and agitate. "I say the word, again, as I keep paying attention to the articulations of life on the ground, to the possibility of the overflowing of that life, of the over-being that outlives erasure and annihilation, and therefore exists beyond the war, beyond occupation, beyond violence, after."

me in @publicbooks.bsky.social thinking through what a philology beyond liberalism might look like via one book which really shows us a path forward and one which very much so does not // the age of babel is dead, long live the age of the pentecost!

Our commons are being gifted to tech. Private equity has its eyes on buying up parts of the grid to fuel a speculative dystopian future where AI data centers drink our water and energy resources. Just this month, blackrock buys an entire public utility and it barely makes waves.

This is absolutely stunning. "We see BlackRock positioning itself very aggressively to take advantage of the entire supply chain when it comes to AI and data centers, and power generation is a really key part of that,” Schafer told the Prospect. "

This was a $2.2 billion dollar project, less than 15 years old, and already getting shut down. You can see it driving from LA to Las Vegas - it looks like the eye of Sauron and apparently incinerates 6000 birds per year.

It's clear that printing and distribution of my publication TASKS FOR THE NATIONAL GUARD IN CHICAGO is going to disrupt my life at a time when I have no time, so here are files you can print from. It's a double-sided 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper. Please do not edit the text. Have fun!

A pink folded sheet shown next to a bone folder with the title:

TASKS FOR THE NATIONAL GUARD IN CHICAGO

What follows is a preliminary list of 25 recommended tasks in advance of the pointless military occupation of Chicago by the
National Guard, ordered by the president. These tasks may be completed in no particular order but they must be completed. Once finished to our satisfaction, new tasks can be assigned as needed. Good luck, troops.

If you saw my earlier posts with this same intro header, Tasks for the National Guard in Chicago, they have become the latest Public Collectors zine. I finished it this morning. It's a single folded sheet and I made 425 copies. Get one free on 8/31, 11-6 at the Hairpin Arts Center, at #ZineMercado

True: @zohranmamdani lives in 1 unit of rent-stabilized housing.

Also true: Andrew Cuomo oversaw the loss of 96,064 units of rent-stabilized housing. And killed NYC’s program helping people move out of shelter.

Leaders must show moral clarity. Andrew, time to move out. 🧵
