Victorian gravestones often featured hands, a common funerary motif. A hand with an upward finger symbolized the path to heaven and eternal life, guiding mourners to look heavenward, trust in God, and find comfort.

This particularly lovely example is from Great Ness, Shropshire.

That was my thought too ๐Ÿคฃ I do love the little snippets of folklore because often they leave you with more questions than answers ๐Ÿคฃ

In some rural parts of Shropshire, branches of thorns were concealed above the entrance to the home as an apotropaic device. The thorns were meant to protect the house, as witches and the Devil are said to be repelled by sharp objects.

I've actually got lots of stories from around the area in my research (Amy) and there may be some of those stories entering a future episode. The whole area is very haunted!

๐Ÿฆ‡A little Coven update ๐Ÿฆ‡

We've spent the summer researching and preparing for a fantastic spooky season. We don't want to give too much away, but expect even more laughs, ghosts, great guests, history and a exploration of the Devil himself!๐Ÿ•ฏ

The lychgate of St Andrews Church, Hope Bowdler was erected in 1863 and is the only one in Shropshire with a coffin stone. Coffin stones were used to rest the coffin before its final journey. The lychgate itself is highly symbolic, marking the boundary between consecrated and unconsecrated ground.

The iron grave of Arabella Yate lies in Ashford Carbonel churchyard. I was told that in the 20th century, the grave brought fear into local children. They claimed Arabella was a witch, buried deeply in metal for protection. If you circled it, you risked her return.

Dinham Bridge in Ludlow is said to be the site of a ghost bottle, cast into the river after being bottled by a priest. We do not know much about this spirit, other than it was incredibly violent. Perhaps it remains, under the bridge, ready to be awakened...

This striking account from August 1872 tells of a colliery "ghost." This report comes from near Wrexham, but colliery ghosts are a common theme across Britain. Reports often feature ghostly miners, eerie sounds, and apparitions warning of impending doom.

Pentre Ifan is over five thousand years old and constructed from local bluestone (also used for Stonehenge), there is a real magic to this ancient site. Folklore suggests that fairies are seen here, resembling little children in clothes like "soldiers with red caps."

In June 1919, navigator Arthur Brown, this black cat toy called Twinkletoes, and pilot John Alcock made the first nonstop Atlantic flight. Twinkletoes rode in Arthurโ€™s Jacket. Both men had served in the Royal Flying Corps during WWI. You can see him in RAF Cosford Museum.

This 1635 half-timbered house in Cherrington, Shropshire, is said to be 'The house that Jack built', though it isn't known who Jack was. Some state the rhyme is a version of an ancient Hebrew chant. It was first published in 1755 in 'Nurse Truelove's New Year's Gift'.

St Non's Well sits on the cliff top, along the coastal path from St David's, Pembrokeshire.

It is here that St Non reputedly gave birth to her son, later to become St David, in the 6th century. Legend states that a healing spring came forth from the moment he was born.
