Let Maris fail but have it move the story forward. If something new appears like a glowing crystal or a junk computer they should capitalize on it before anyone else. If they can't do something immediately they should be able to in a different circumstance.
Intelligent people aren't often resourceful. Just because they can do something doesn't mean it will work. They depend on the resources that are available to them like energy, materials and components.
You need to curse her with poverty and make repairs more or less likely to succeed with what is available in the story. There is always a chance a repair makes something worse. This is what people get wrong with intelligent characters that I think the Fallout TV show did unusually well.

I know I can get them from Webstaurant but no business that has employee breakrooks also has a business account with a store for restaraunts. They'd never order enough stuff for it to be worth it.
Did you know that Bunn coffee machines are the bomb and can make coffee up to SCA standards? Those big coffee machines are actually really really good. Those are everywhere but nobody knows how to use them properly.
