So I guess that Mamet is to me as Wagner is to Stephen Fry, which is to say, a very guilty pleasure in the field of drama, and not somebody whose politics I admire. But then again, as Uncle Walt said, I am vast, I contain multitudes.
And in every movie or play he's written, there's a similar fake fact delivered by the character with such absolute moral clarity that everyone accepts it as true. It's almost like Mamet was teaching us all a lesson about how propaganda works.
That fake fact is a shaggy dog story about how the first organized fire department in Europe was on the border of Sardinia and Dalmatia, so the reason that the Dalmatian is the symbol of the fire department is that a sardine would be ridiculous.
Then I studied David Mamet obsessively (who wrote the script to The Untouchables), and learned that he likes to put fake trivia into his movies for any number of reasons, but I think mostly because he likes to prove he's very clever.
Among my other favorite fake facts is the one from State & Main.
Then, I studied Roman history exhaustively and discovered this was absolutely bullshit.
