While the quoted have got Johnsonβs transphobia covered, I should add the ditto of LabourList is transphobic, and itβs *very* noticeable in their coverage.
As an American, I feel the same way about the Democrats, and it translates anywhere across the board. Politicians aren't your friends, they're there as a vector for public pressure. It doesn't matter whether you like them as long as they're forced to defend your rights
Can you elaborate on this? What does one have to do with the other?
Oh yeah I'm a Green and I will be voting Green. I'm just saying that this is a positive development, because it shows the Greens are pressurising Labour from the left on issues like this.
This is gross... and feels like it's moving in some sort of sphere adjacent to sexual harassment?! Why would you show a gay Jewish man holding hands with a far right homophobe, with a serious history of antisemitism?
Love some casual homophobia on a Friday.
Frankly as a trans woman I just want my rights - donβt care if itβs from pure self interest or the goodness of their heart.
Any win is a win for me.
Her cousin is a trans man, so she has a personal stake
I think βvast majorityβ is def overstating, but I think thereβs a critical mass for sure, especially with the new intake.
I think itβs an issue that we (the trans community and allies) will have to grapple with. I similarly note a worrying trend re conspiracism.
I genuinely unironically think itβs like a trauma response (when the literal medical regulator is led by shady bigots itβs hard to not feel gaslit)
Yep bsky.app/profile/eliz...
Literally βa win is a winβ was my first thought when I read this π
Emilyβs cousin is a trans man and she has taken a strong stance on this in the past Tbf. Not really defending her or Labour at all, but this hasnβt come out of nowhere.
I think it does say something about the political ripples right now though
Yeah thatβs the point I was making really
We've just learned that the person at the MHRA whose letter caused Wes 'I follow the clinical evidence' Streeting to cancel the puberty blockers trial is Professor Jacob George, the GC who enjoyed mocking trans people on his social media account.
Why did Wes Streeting cover up his name?
However, several Labour MPs said they had been lobbied by constituents and that backing Phillipson at the same time as the guidance was released would make them "extremely unpopular" in their seats. One MP said: "I back Bridget, but if this guidance is published before the vote closes there's no way I can vote for her. I've got a big LGBT community in my constituency and I'd never get their vote again."
This was already being briefed out by Labour MPs re EHRC guidance in October. Iβm sure this MP is not feeling any more relaxed now. We need to keep this pressure up.
The fact, is heaps of Labour MPs come back to Parliament with their local councils a sea of Green, itβs only going to help us.
"I dread even saying this... but I think that we've ended up in the wrong place on trans, and we've done that by treading very self-consciously and not actually following our hearts, which is that trans people are on the margins, they are vulnerable. "If the Labour Party doesn't look after trans people, what are we about? "They're most likely to get beaten up. They're the ones who are most likely to have prejudice against them. We should not be indulging in anything that marginalises them even more."
Emily Thornberryβs words on Radio 4 in response to the Green win in Gorton and Denton.
This is why wins like this are so important, whatever you may think of the Greens (much like the immigration rebellion brewing).
I worked for years on a campaign to end the handcuffing of children in the care system.
This is in breach of the UN convention of the rights of child, and is simply, truly evil, and I donβt use the word lightly.
Yeah my issue isnβt people who grew up there/have connections to the region. Itβs more white Brits who grew up here who specifically emigrate there to avoid paying tax/embrace the βinfluencer lifestyleβ which I think is something quite different
Yepβ¦ offensive to the soul is just bang on. They just arenβt my people (and I say that without a hint of snobbishness - itβs a values thing!)
Dubai to me represents the worst of vapid materialism. Trading your human rights, and freedoms for a Chanel handbag and a rented Lamborghiniβ¦.
No taxes paid, but you get cut cheap labour from an exploited underclass. Itβs a modern dystopia of a Western βexpatβ moral void
The thing is though is I just do have an ethical objection to it.
Much like the Brits who in generations past would emigrate to ie apartheid South Africa for a βgood lifeβ (see cheap household staff who were part of an oppressed underclass)
Abolish the Home Office
As a WFH queen Iβm delighted that I never have to wear something so unchic (nice top for calls with leggings or pajama bottoms is the only way to go)
Sure I more meant that it means he probably wouldnβt push ahead with it due to the toxic politics of it.
I could be wrong though! Hopefully it does just crash and burn entirely
I think that would be *so* toxic for Starmer if he had to rely on the Tories to get it passed, it would be fatal for him.
For anyone who would like the clip (including George).
Need her for the next Green MP - crack on demand and self id, itβs what the people want x
