We're all looking very forward to seeing what sort of projects this dataset launches, and how many others adopt and adapt our AWS framework for their own regions. It's a very exciting time for remote sensing of water quality, and we hope that this dataset elevates everyone's analyses even higher.
Behind the scenes -- We've created an AWS Open Data Agreement to publicly host all 700 TB of these data. All metadata are updated dynamically to ensure reproducibility and provenance is retained. To put it mildly, this was a massive effort among some seriously skilled scientists.
We applied the ACOLITE reflectance correction in an AWS framework, where as new Sentinel-2 imagery come in, the images are automatically corrected and published via an AWS S3 bucket, Globus, and ScienceBase. As far as I know, this is the first dynamic, national-scale aquatic reflectance product.
A challenge to remote sensing of #lakes #wetlands #rivers is that many of extant satellite products are corrected for land, making water signatures muted because water is dark. We constantly hear about how we need an aquatic reflectance product. So, we made one. doi.org/10.1002/lol2...

And we highlight how these varying classification schemes can dramatically impact other fields that might be using these limnological ideas, such remote sensing.
We also looked at how our understanding of regional water quality can change when you apply different classification schemes at national scales.
We recreated figures from Wetzel’s Limnology text to see how fundamental ideas, such as clinograde and orthograde Temperature and DO curves, shake out when you apply various trophic state classification schemes.
