NCAR provides the facilities, tools, & data critical for atmospheric sci education & research. Leading computer models of the Earth System are developed here. The training, continuing education, & sci exchanges NCAR makes possible are irreplaceable. Its dismantling would be chaotic & devastating.

Just a friendly reminder that the Polar Vortex is not an Arctic storm, polar hurricane, blizzard or things that comes to visit us. Lobes of its wave system can dip south into the U.S. bringing colder air. I have already seen a car commercial improperly refer to it and a major newspaper headline.
Just threw up my hands in disbelief that the dataset I’m using has latitude North to South instead of South to North like the rest of my data.
It’s comforting how, even as the world falls apart, some things stay the same.

Trump's budget plan may cut NASA science funding by up to 50%, alarming scientists who call it an "extinction-level event" for space science. This threatens ongoing missions and would cede future space exploration to China. Also, about 30% of NASA's science budget is for Earth and climate science.

Make no mistake. Though you cannot always see what these meteorologists do. You will feel it. WE will feel it.
I am gutted. And I am so sorry.
But they are always there working FOR US. “for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.”
But today, with these mass firings, this is being threatened. This protection. This enhancement.
Those who work at NOAA and the NWS do this daily. Sometimes it’s obvious, like when you get a tornado or blizzard warning.
Sometimes it’s not, like when a weather balloon is launched and the data gets ingested into a weather model to make the forecast that much better.
The NWS mission:
“Provide weather, water and climate data, forecasts, warnings, and impact-based decision support services for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.”
Again: “…for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.”
