South Korean black comedy/thriller. Lee Byung-hun stars as Man-su who loses his job of 25 years. When he can't get another, he plots to kill the competition so he will get the job. It doesn't go to plan of course. Superb.

I can't imagine a bleaker film than Threads but this is a close second. Tarr and wife's final film. A man and his daughter fall apart as their horse refuses to eat and their well dries up. Harrowing and haunting.

Soviet drama, attacked by Kruschev and recut. The original version was released years later. French New Wave style tale of 3 friends struggling to make their lives worthwhile. Fascinating on location in Moscow 60s scenes.

Wiseman just died and this is back on BFI Player. It's a documentary about a facility for the criminally insane in Massachusetts. Mostly sad and nasty. Sometimes funny. Banned for years, it's an all-time great documentary.

The Devil Probably (1977). Directed by Robert Bresson
Antoine Monnier plays Charles who we discover is dead at the start of the film, either by suicide or murder. The film then goes back to how he got to that point. A fascinating, nihilistic and haunting late Bresson classic.

The Empty Man (2020). Directed by David Prior
Horror starring James Badge Dale. This starts with a brilliant 20 minute segment that the rest doesn't quite live up to but it's fascinating if a bit too long and the ending doesn't entirely make sense but gets points for bleakness.

French body horror. De Van directs, writes and stars in a remarkable debut feature. She plays Esther who badly injures her leg and becomes obsessed by the wound. Enlarging it and then moving on to her arm. Fascinating and repulsive.

Hungarian film set near the end of World War II. Andras Kozak plays a Hungarian student who may have been fighting with the Hungarians. He ends up on a farm guarded by a young Russian. They become friends until things go bad. Superb.

Excellent crime thriller from the Safdies. Robert Pattinson stars as Connie and Benny Safdie is perfect as his learning disabled brother Nicky. A robbery goes wrong. Nick is arrested. Connie tries to bail him out. Frantic.

Banned due to the Algerian War, released eventually in 1963, this was controversial in its day. Excellent spy thriller with a lot of things people loved about Breathless but he did them here first.

I loved HadΕΎihaliloviΔ's films Earwig, Evolution and Innocence and this is fantastic too. Sometimes dreamlike. A young girl runs away and ends up on a film set with Marion Cottillard who takes a close interest in her. Superb.

Hollywood 90028 (1973). Directed by Christina Hornisher
Mark is a photographer. At the start he strangles a woman. Then we see him look for work and date other women. He meets Michele who he likes, but the end is sudden and shocking and has an amazing final shot. On Prime.
That lovely food! They should name a wing after you after all the time you've spent there. I would say try not to worry until you hear the treatment plan but that's like saying try not to breathe. I'll be hoping for more positive news on your behalf.
I think she's right. The 30th is nearly 2 weeks away. The sooner you start treatment the better. Hopefully there's a chance they can get all of it with surgery. So sorry you're having to go through this.

Horror/thriller/surreal supernatural drama. Wonderfully atmospheric. Great cinematography for its low budget. Alice Krige (the Borg Queen from Star Trek) is an actress who finds she can exact revenge in her dreams on abusive men.
Not sure how I could ever be a calming influence but if I am then that's great!

Marty Supreme (2025). Directed by Josh Safdie
This lives up to the hype. Chalamet is brilliant. He brings an obnoxious character to life so well that you get dragged along as he tries to become a table tennis champion. Not a sport film really. A great character study.

This film had the Punishment Poll, where audiences could choose the fate of the villain. Castle introduces the film and gives the "result". It's about a surgeon forced to treat a man with a hideous fixed grin. Sadistic but fun.

Three sisters. One is dying. The other two aren't much use. They leave the maid to do the caring. There is much under the surface. The tension is unbearable. It gets particularly grim towards the end. Beautifully horrific.
