"Dark Money" Funds Climate Change Denial Effort
A Drexel University study finds that a large slice of donations to organizations that deny global warming are funneled through third-party pass-through organizations that conceal the original funder
“The largest, most-consistent money fueling the climate denial movement are a number of well-funded conservative foundations built with so-called ‘dark money,’ or concealed donations, according to an analysis released Friday afternoon.”

Massive, century-old redwood cut down in Seattle neighborhood after federal permit issued
A century-old redwood in Seattle’s Madison Park was cut down Friday, despite weeks of protests from neighbors who said bald eagles had been using the tree.
Giant redwood tree is Seattle neighborhood cut down, raising questions about continued weakness and shortcomings of Seattle current Tree Protection Ordinance, despite Seattle's efforts to increase tree canopy. This tree could have been saved with more creative planning to protect it.

Help needed Now! WA State House budget bill would eliminate DNR’s Urban and Community Forestry program! | Friends of Urban Forests
Efforts to eliminate WA State Urban and Community Forestry Division in 2026 WA State supplemental state operations budget. Question - who is opposed to protecting and growing urban forests in WA State? Maybe the development community who proposed the Commerce Committee take it over in another bill?

It can be up to 2-3 feet thick, & is spongy to the touch
This one is in England, so no risk from fire, & is a baby at a mere 165 years old

In Seattle the city has said new trees need watering for up to 5 years to help them get established. Planting of trees occurs in October and November, not the much drier summer months.

Our "curly elm". There are two others nearby, but Dutch elm disease has claimed one and the other is showing symptoms. May not have long to enjoy this one.

Thinking SMART when setting targets for urban tree cover - Forest Research
Urban tree cover should be SMART (Specific; Measurable; Achievable; Resourced; Time-bound), say researchers
🌳 Cities are setting targets for urban tree cover, but how effective are they?
A new study finds targets range from 4% to 50%, with timelines from 3 to 51 years. Researchers recommend using the SMART framework to make these goals realistic and impactful.

“Trees offer many benefits to cities, and cooling is one of them,” Pickett explained. “Trees are good at cooling because they pump a lot of water from the ground into the air, and when that water evaporates at the leaf surface, it absorbs a vast amount of heat."

Image Description: Photo features a Red-breasted Nuthatch, a small bird with a gray back and a rusty colored front, hanging down from a branch and looking at the photographer. Background of the image is blue.
Like other nuthatches, Red-breasted Nuthatches use their strong legs and claws to walk up, down, and sideways on tree trunks, probing in the bark crevices for food. They readily come to seed and suet feeders and will cache food in crevices to return to later.

Building healthy cities and communities means incorporating trees and nature as a critical component. We are part of nature and need it where we live everyday, not just something to see on a vacation once a year. Urban forests help clean our air and water, reduce urban heat islands and much more.

An apple tree branch shows off its small collection of blue green lichen (a branched Usnea species, a flat branch hugging common shield lichen, a fruticose oakmoss) and a couple of twigs of vibrant green moss (cats tail?)
It's that time of year when the leaves are gone and the lichen and mosses growing on the tree branches take center stage
