But if the ROBOT is making a call for fire, you can’t rely on the robot having made distinction because the robot doesn’t have judgment in any meaningful sense of the word. You can’t base your reliance on anything because there’s nothing there.
There is an obligation to take steps to distinguish between combatant and noncombatants in targeting. The FO is taking them. You are relying on him to have done so, which is an appropriate thing for you to do in your role.
If he failed to distinguish, but you had no reason to suspect, that’s on him
