But she won't leave him. But she also knows her daughters and nephew deserve a chance. She knows options are limited: she has nothing left to offer the two young men already eyeing escape.

This woman: probably the most brilliant member of the Donner Party. What was she thinking?

Those left at the lake and creek had been told that Woodsworth was coming with more food and better help, but the days went by, and rations and bear meat were gone. It's hard to get into their heads here. It's hard to imagine.

Tamzene must have known George was a goner.

Tamzene herself is also a mystery. She must know her 3 daughters were abandoned by men her swindled her out of a tidy sum. Perhaps she checks on them. But she now has a nephew to take care of, and he is not doing good. It also must be more apparent now that Woodsworth isn't coming.

Keseberg and company are probably dining on babies. Nicholas Clark and Jean-Baptiste Trudeau are debating why they still cut wood for a woman whose husband is obviously dying and an orphan who is also on deaths door.

They probably go from lake to creek. Hungry. Annoyed.

March 12, 1847. IDK. Probably Eddy and Foster are nearing the summit. Stark is probably still shuffling 8 children down the mountain while Mrs Peggy Breen carries her baby Isabella and Patrick is worthless. Those at Johnson's Ranch or Sutter's Fort or other nearby settlements are recovering.

Levinah Murphy at this point is mad and blind from starvation. She says nothing to Keseberg, but tells the Donner girls and son Simon that Keseberg must have strangled the child in his sleep.

Not helping Keseberg's case is his immediate butchery of the boy.

Yeah. Eddy gonna be pissed.

John Stark: what a guy. Single handedly carries seven children to safety and gets Patrick Breen off his lazy ass. Way to go. You rule!

As for the Eddy and Foster quest, neither will have a son to rescue.

Little James Eddy is dead. Keseberg tells the Murphy cabin.

"I will not abandon these people."

Two at a time, John Stark carries two children a distance with Patrick and Peggy Breen walking with. When he gets a distance, he sets the children down with the two and goes back for two more. He repeats this for all in the pit.

"Take the healthiest and leave the rest."

Stark, a man strangely full of this alien feeling of empathy in this story of assholes, says β€œI am here on a mission of mercy, and I will not half do the work. You can all go if you want to, but I shall stay by these people while they and I live.”

Howard Oakley also grabs a child. He picks up Mary Donner, a much older child of some weight. She cannot walk due to her burned feet. He also heads back.

John Stark picks up two children. The other four continue to the Lake Camp after giving Stark advice.

He will stay and rescue one of the children. This helps him collect another $53 dollars without having to go back and possibly be outed as the thief he is.

And of course he picks up the smallest child: the incredibly starved infant Liz Graves.

He heads back for his reward.

Will Eddy and Will Foster want to rescue their sons: they aren't interested in stopping. But John Stark doesn't want these people, all children mind you except for Peggy Breen and her useless husband, to starve in that hole.

The Third Relief splits here. Charles Stone sees πŸ’΅.

Approximately March 11, 1847. The Third Relief likely reaches the Starved Camp.

John Stark is haunted by the condition of the people in the now 20+ feet deep hole. He, unlike most of the men in this story with possibly the exception of Charles Stanton (dead for those reasons), has empathy.

"And wander in the summer fields, The scenes of boyhood’s hours."

Damn. Poor guy.

They continue on towards Starved Camp...

Sometime around this point the Eddy child will go to bed with Keseberg and will not wake up the next day.

Did he die of starvation? Did Keseberg hasten his death?

They take a couple of things off his person, including a poem (!).

"O! after many roving years, How sweet it is to come Back to the dwelling place of youth, Our first and dearest home; To turn away our wearied eyes From proud ambition’s towers,..."

This is essentially a salvage operation for the rescuers to get a bit of cash, although Stanton does not have much.

The man had sacrificed his life for families not his. Now vermin were nibbling his corpse.

Considering that this is the Donner party, that seems hardly noteworthy.

Approximately March 10, 1847: the days here are gross estimates based on conflicting accounts and a lack of real standardized timestamps.

This is likely when the Third Relief finds the body of Charles Stanton. Charles Stone had run into his corpse on his way back from the Lake camp.

Oh and G'kar? He really wants in the secret meetings, and even busts Delenn on the whole Ranger thing. And eventually he gives Garibaldi the Narn Quran because he is helping.

No seriously, this does pay off. I promise.

Anyway the recording on Clark killing Santiago gets out, and they do the whole "fake news" defense. But now Pam Bon... I mean Julie Musante has to go back to earth for damage control. To which Zach slips a little bit about secret meetings to her before chickening out. Fuck you, Zach.

So the Old Ones were the weird Eldritch abominations that spooked her ship and almost killed her if it wasn't for G'kar.

Old Ones don't seem so keen on helping until Ivanova does the whole "the Vorlons think you're pussies" thing. They offer their help... when the time comes.

Musante tries to fuck Sheridan too, but he only plants one on her to distract her from a badly timed visit from Planet Ivanova, and then complains of how cold it is. Shrinkage is a thing...

Anyways, Marcus and Ivanova post planet go visit the Old Ones. Remember Cat Sakai?

But it was just a power move, and soon she doms him over being a shitty Nazi. Which, Garibaldi totally lays into him for the Nazi band, and then Zach pulls the old "I wouldn't be a Nazi if you would invite me to your secret meetings." Lame, Zach.

Musante has two weapons in her repertoire: an absolute commitment to making up the truth about things to fit in line with the Trum... I am sorry, Clark's administration. And did I mention the DOW is 50,000?

Her second weapon is fucking. She fucks Zach Allen, who thinks he has a girlfriend now.

Instead Ivanova will have to take on the planetary cosplay. She is better at it anyway it turns out: she not only finds the Old Ones they want to help in their coming war, but she also gets a recording of Clark admitting to killing President Santiago.

Neat.

So anyways....

Babylon 5: S3E5. "Voices of Authority"

This might be the episode that gets us canceled for wrong speak.

Enter Julie Musante, a blonde Clark hire on Babylon 5 to assert dominance and new speak.

Her timing is bad because Sheridan was supposed to be a planet.

Yes, that's what I said.

Who are you? What do you want? Did JMS have a time machine to see the rise of a certain blonde woman in politics?

The teenage teamster will be one of the few working, single men to come out of this unscathed. And as he has no family connections to the Donner's, and they have no income or food to pay him, and all that remains is a dying man, his single minded wife, and a starved kid: why should he stay?

Her young son Samuel is now in the care of Tamzene as she also cares for her dying husband.

Nicholas Clark has managed to get a bear, so they have food for a time.

Clark and Trudeau continue to wonder if Cady and Stone had the right idea. Not that Trudeau wanted to stay anyway.

Of course, we know that the Foster child is dead and food for the Murphy cabin, and the ailing Eddy boy is in Keseberg's care.

Which... we will get there, folks. A mystery for the ages, of which Keseberg has a couple.

But first its Elizabeth Donner's turn to die.
