Ps 120,6-7
Multum incola fuit anima mea
cum his, qui oderunt pacem.
Ego eram pacificus;
cum loquebar, illi impugnabant me.
I have had enough of dwelling
with those who hate peace.
I am for peace, but when I speak,
they are for war.

Beautiful piece in @plough.bsky.social today on a Franciscan monastic community in Belgium

And a particularly significant appointment β whoever it would have been β for our diocese as our bishop reaches the mandatory retirement age next month.
I appreciate this detail
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, Titular Archbishop of Sepino, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. Archbishop Caccia, 68, has served as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations since 2019, and succeeds Cardinal Christophe Pierre, 80.
He died in the plague that famously spared only the teenaged oblate Bede β my patron saint β and the abbot Coelfrith at the twin monastery nearby at Jarrow
Friday of spring break. I read Book V of THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV today β the famous restaurant conversation between Ivan and Alyosha, including the Grand Inquisitor chapter β *and* am essentially all caught up in my work. I don't think I've ever concluded a spring break like this.

The Other Doctor Casper has a poster of this in her office at EMU
I have it paired with a photograph of the Edmund Fitzgerald. St. Albert actually did some important early work in metallurgy. The parish serving the Catholic community at Michigan Tech β a mining school β is dedicated to St. Albert.
I have a print of Daniel Mitsui's St. Albert in my office β not because of the little image of St. Thomas Aquinas destroying a chatbot but not *not* because of it either.

For several years our parish hosted monthly Sunday-evening celebrations of Vespers in the Byzantine rite by the clergy and lay cantors of the Byzantine parish in Allen Park. Their pastor at the time was particularly dedicated to friendly outreach to Latin Catholics.
Milan Lach was eparch of the local Byzantine Catholic eparchy here, the Eparchy of Parma (Ohio) from 2018 to 2023.

Mar 6: Feast of Balthere (Baldred) (β 756). Anchorite from Lindisfarne linked with Lothian sites Aldham (Auldhame), whose monastic community he may have founded; the Bass Rock, his likely retreat; and Tinangeham (Tyninghame), whose religious centre eclipsed Aldham by mid-10thC. #medievalsky
The page that bears the exquisitely illuminated chi-rho, a monogram used to symbolize the name of Christ.
Mar 6: Feast of Billfrith (Billfrid), 8thC hermit and goldsmith who adorned the binding on the Lindisfarne Gospels, as the inscription in it states, with gold, silver and gems. The book survives, but the precious binding is lost. #medievalsky

THE ASCENT OF MOUNT CARMEL was my previous early-morning reading.
βοΈ In March 1942, Saint Titus Brandsma writes to reassure his community and family. Though illness and sleepless nights trouble him, his spirit remains steadyβeven singing softly in prison... a powerful witness amid great suffering.

I'm facilitating two discussions at our parish on the writings of St. Francis of Assisi β one on his Admonitions next week (during Lent) and one on nature and stewardship in April.
I'm leading off both with Dana Gioia's new translation of the Canticle of All Creatures:
