My 19 year-old son, who is in the Marine Corps, has asked me to send him a couple of books of Ancient & Classical Philosophy. He has read a few of the Stoics, especially as they relate to being in the military.

Any suggestions?

See also pupil dataโ€ฆ simultaneously fascinating and slightly terrifying how much is held and what it can be linked to.

OCR people, you have to sign up for these talks - itโ€™s the whole section of the specification (the bit the exam board is afraid of) Henry 1529-47. #historyteacher #EarlyTudors Theyโ€™re so great for revision - theyโ€™re an overview using the sources as support. @nationalarchives.gov.uk.web.brid.gy

Particularly frustrating when the alternate routes need to be chosen several miles away from the potential flood zones.

I check these pretty regularly too and it gives a ballpark but doesnโ€™t actually tell you whether the nearby roads are passable or not as a result. It is just one of those things that you would think tech had solved but it hasnโ€™t.

A year 10 (15 year old) student told me heโ€™d made all of the โ€œMr Shahaโ€™s Marvellous Machinesโ€. I assumed he was taking the piss. Turns out he wasnโ€™t - his mother told me during parents evening yesterday that he had bought the book and their house was full of his makes. Made my week.

Sad that Wales isn't on there (though totally understand, it's a different data set). Where we live, all the different routes out flood on the regular - one of the most frustrating things is that the main way to tell which way you can go (if any) is *still* by looking at a Facebook page.

So policy makers either face the choice of building a China-style repressive Internet to enforce the law by stripping privacy and security for all of its users โ€“ banning VPNS etc โ€“ or eventually admitting it got this one wrong, probably after several more countries copy the policy.

Iโ€™m shocked, stunned etc.

Meanwhile, everywhere else around the world assumes Australia has cracked it and are rushing to copy their law.

They waited for me (so, added awareness of holding them up) and as soon as I got there everyone was off again, with them well-rested and raring to go and me barely having caught my breath. It felt like a grind - had I felt comfortable to go at my own pace it would have been a much nicer experience.

Yes. I was thinking about this recently when climbing a hill with my children, who are far fitter than I am. I was constantly going slower and finding it harder, and still falling behind, and very aware of this fact.

Wales have got to agreement by going for the "world peace" approach though - the four purposes of the Welsh curriculum are high level enough that you can't really disagree with them but neither are they very useful at the details level.

Pleased to see alternative views on this - it feels like there is still much to discuss. I was somewhat disquieted by Monday's email referring only to "widespread positive recognition" of the original article, which felt somewhat dismissive of the many autistic voices I'd seen challenging it.

This one in particular has always had an interest in maps and map making and put that alongside the people/political/economics side of it Iโ€™m really quite keen. I didnโ€™t do it at GCSE so would be fun to learn for me too. Which is of course the key factor here.

Upheld SEND complaints rise 25% in a year Statistics 'expose the extent to which LAs continue to fail children and young people with SEND'

The number of SEND complaints upheld by the councils watchdog has leapt by a quarter in one year

In 2025, the Local Government Ombudsman upheld 1,315 SEND complaints, up 26% on 2024, and more than five times the 236 upheld in 2021

Tuesday 10th March
On 10th March 1997 Buffy The Vampire Slayer was broadcast for the first time. The tone is set in the showโ€™s opening scene* where a teen couple break into a school; a โ€˜damsel in distressโ€™ is implied. But a Bait & Switch happens and the reveal is that the boy is in danger and the girl is a vampire.
The challenging of gender stereotypes continues throughout the show. The title characterโ€™s superhuman strength and vampire slaying skills are far superior to those of the (often incompetent) male characters. Her school is built on the literal entrance to Hell so there is no shortage of vampires and other demons to โ€˜slayโ€™ through the showโ€™s 7 seasons.
The show led a progressive movement in pop culture. While Buffy juggled her calling with her studies, the series also pushed TV representation forward in a way that mattered to a lot of viewers. One female characterโ€™s journey from dating boys to a meaningful long term gay relationship made her one of the first mainstream teen bisexual characters and sparked serious conversations about labels and visibility.
You can spot Buffyโ€™s influence on modern teen fantasy, girl-led hero stories and how TV handles LGBT relationships with seriousness not just shock value. The show is so influential there are books and university courses on โ€˜Buffy Studiesโ€™.
Do you ever watch โ€˜oldโ€™ TV shows? Are old TV shows as accessible as old music or old films?
Which TV show of your generation will academics study because theyโ€™re challenging stereotypes?
If you had a secret calling, who would be in your โ€˜scooby gangโ€™ of close confidants & supporters?

Pop culture this Tuesday on TGT. Tell your students about the gender stereotypes challenged on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. They presented LGBT relationships seriously too, rather than for short term plot point. So ground breaking you can take Buffy Studies at university!

From April we will be running a monthly outdoor art and forest school family project at the Llanfyllin Workhouse Y Dolydd in Llanfyllin and would like an idea of when would best suit people.

My favourite was early days of Covid mask mandates, in the local rural spar, where the shop assistant on the till said to a grizzled old farmer โ€œyouโ€™re supposed to wear a mask nowโ€. He stared back at her, replied โ€œso Iโ€™ve heardโ€, took his shopping and left. Having none of it.

The thing about Bridgerton is it is so obviously silly and everyone knows it but is also fully embracing that fact with a โ€˜hell if Shakespeare can pull off some of his ridiculousness why canโ€™t we?โ€˜ vibe. Borderline obsessed with season four. The theatre kiddies really show through.
