Had a dream the house was flooding so I did the logical thing and grabbed a surfboard and started surfing around the living room.

At long last, 5-Minute Dungeon is ready to play!

I'd love to get your thoughts and opinions on it, problems you encounter, etc.

(Remember, this was meant to be a very simple game with limited animation, no sound, etc. So, you might want to lower expectations...)

I attempted a speed run but I had to try 3 times to beat the wizard, resulting in a best time of roughly 3 1/2 minutes. All in all, taking time to read dialogue, figure out puzzles and explore COULD take 5 minutes, but it's probably more like a 2 minute dungeon, if I'm honest.

Added health bars and missile sprites for the turn-based combat sequence between the player and the evil wizard. Not skill-based; the game rolls a d20 to determine if the arrows/fireballs hit, miss, or crit. Only the player can crit, and it's an insta-kill. I'm not so lucky in this example, though.

4 floor tiles arranged in a pattern; the first puzzle you must solve to unlock a door and gain access to the majority of the dungeon.

Here's a gnome with a yellow key to unlock the yellow door. Beyond the yellow door is the wizard's chamber where the golden chalice resides. You must answer the gnome's riddle if you wish to gain the key!

Inside the wizard's chamber, an evil wizard awaits you. He'll sling fireballs at you, but you can shoot arrows back. It's 10 hits to defeat him, but if you can roll a critical hit, you'll defeat him in one shot! However, the chalice remains hidden even after you defeat him! Think you can find it?

I'm so close to finished, just need to add some extra bits of narration to give the player guidance and arrow/fireball sprites.

Nah, this shit is hard. I’ve been trying to make games since the days of Basic in the early 90s and nothing ever clicked. I’m just now finally starting to feel somewhat competent, but it’s still just basically “try whatever and see what works.”

Meanwhile, I’m sitting on the porch listening to the radio and occasionally skating on the street. Had the cats and dog with me, but they all wanted to go back inside. So, it’s just me enjoying some decent weather (at last).

Added a boss fight to my tiny RPG. You basically stand still and trade shots at each other, hoping the rng weighs in your favor 10 times. I’m kinda thinking about making a critical hit an insta-kill, just to make it feel extra rewarding to roll one.

I've been at this since December, trying to figure out turn-based combat, how to fit a whole dialogue system into a Pico 8 cartridge and failing horribly. Changing engines, changing scope, battling burnout... One step forward, two steps back, etc.

I mean, fuck. I just want to make something fun.

Working on monthly bite-sized RPG adventures using a "5 room dungeon" format. Quick, little turn-based games with puzzles to solve, secrets to uncover, NPCs to talk to, hidden objects/treasure to search for. Very brief, light on combat.

Earlier today my autoplay pulled up the "$3,000 laptop" video from 12 days ago, then "Apple II on a PC Card" from 2 years ago, and then "LGR Oddware - Creative 3D0 blaster" from 5 years ago. I was busy working in the other room, so I just let them play. Every now and then, it just does this.

Well, I ran out of tokens, which is part of why I’ve been studying advanced techniques and more efficient ways of using tables. I’m basically just rewriting the whole game and it’s not going well. I’m thinking it’s time to switch to Love2D if I really want to make a game and not just a demo.

Currently, Pico 8. I use it to make prototypes, game jams, or scratch out an idea because it's easy to get up and running in seconds. This is my current headache:

Heh, I’m the least qualified person to answer that. Occasionally I read a post about functions and classes and methods and it all goes over my head. I just started learning about metatables and I’m like, I don’t know how I can use any of this. I just struggle along and hope for the best!
