During the Silurian period, over 400 million years ago, the West Midlands was covered by a shallow, tropical sea. Fossil evidence for this includes this Marsupiocrinus genus of extinct crinoid (sometimes called a sea lily), found in the Much Wenlock Formation in Dudley.

New paper! Bird nests (Wood Warblers) are hubs of invertebrate biodiversity on forest floor, hosting more species/individuals than leaf litter. Probably due to heat & food detritus. Losing Wood Warblers = ecological networks lost. #ornithology

Box containing a nest with two eggs, packed in white tissue
An interesting nest I looked at for an enquiry - made by a Woodchat Shrike, found on the Isle of Wight in 1856
This week's new walking route is:
Walsall - Cannock
9.8 miles via Pelsall's two commons, Pelsall Common and Pelsall North Common, exceptionally rare survivals of common land on the edge of West Midlands county

A hand touching a large bracket fungus
Spotted this fallen cherry tree with several impressive Ganoderma brackets at the base #FungiFriends #FungiFriday
From the paper it seems like Phaeolus schweinitzii is the correct name for specimens from Europe
Showing yet again that fungi that were thought to occur across different continents are actually different species - cosmopolitan species are mainly recent colonisers of human modified environments like woodchip

It's good to see wildlife organisations taking the harm caused by dogs seriously. It's much easier to ignore, particularly given the often psychotic response of entitled dog owners
Well done @wildlifebcn.org for taking this stance. At Hayley Wood.
Rights of access do not mean right to ignore the owners requests.

Looking forward to seeing them here! The peak emergence is normally at the end of March in the Midlands
Nice, looks like a Lichenomphalina species. The green slime on the wood is mixture of mycelium and symbiotic algae

Went to see the "I photograph comedians!" exhibition by Andy Hollingworth at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery yesterday. Had a great time. Each photo and memorabilia item sparked conversations about favourite sketches and routines.
