Haha having seen the groups I can now
@tomewing
Music, comics, assorted grousing, he/him. CURRENT THINGS are Discourse 2000, a 2000AD blog and Popular, about the UK’s No 1 hits. I also waste my time (and maybe yours!) with @peoples-pop-polls.bsky.com https://freakytrigger.co.uk

Oh I fucked up is why - there should be 11 countries up there not 10, with the 11th being your first choice :)

Happy birthday to Betty Boo. Here's a reminder of the time she rapped with Public Enemy in the McDonalds at Shepherd's Bush back in 1987 (look out for the unimpressed manager!)

20. SOULJA BOY - “Zan With That Lean” (‘12, USA)
For some people this autotune calliope will be everything they hate about the early 2010s, those people are wrong, it is the sound of pure happiness
youtu.be/Gc9oQPw_gfs?...
Love the stuff in here about how not just the comic‘s cast but its readers think of Maggie & Hopey as an eternal dyad - another parallel with the 80s superhero audience, always yearning for some platonic version of the comic they fell in love with
Strong “a hungry African child would eat those vegetables you’re leaving” energy
(We had to sing SoL on a school camping trip)
Hey* comics people! Go read @dubdobdee.bsky.social unpacking the many layers of Locas and the lives it contains

*(all together now) Hay’s for horses, ass bite!
Yes! The chronology gets fucked around with a bit cos Herge and then his English translators introduce retcons but this is T&T’s debut (and I don’t think the retcons affect them)
The snowy headed dog god was the big fear inducer for me!
CIGARS OF THE PHAROAH (HERGE’S VERSION) is the only edition I - or most people - have read, I need to track down the original at some point cos it’s hard to grasp how big the leap in creativity is otherwise but it’s clearly there
A five panel sequence in which Tintin succumbs to the effect of hallucinogenic gas. As he’s forced to the floor the gas induced visions take up more and more of each panel. They mix Egyptian tomb motifs with the characters he’s encountered so far in the comic. The final panel is all hallucination and sees him being carried off by a dog headed god and placed in a crib, which we will learn are analogues for what’s really happening to him. At the end there’s a meanwhile panel in the real world as two moustachioed men talk to a camel driver
The first “drug induced hallucination” sequence I ever saw in comics (or any fiction) - so memorable I’d have sworn it was at least one page long, maybe two
Always an easy and entertaining read, even if the tricks used to make it flow are getting very visible (constant use of “And” as connective tissue, for instance) - I‘m really enjoying the way it draws on early modern and 19th century history, gives it a distinct flavour
House of Open Wounds - a drawing of a fantasy field surgery with other drawings of tents, a big robot and a war triceratops
17. HOUSE OF OPEN WOUNDS by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Second in the multi-perspective fantasy series, this war hospital story is more episodic than City Of Last Chances and doesn’t ever quite achieve a similar momentum but when the episodic template is M*A*S*H that’s fine in its own right
He’s no Jive Bunny
More songs should start like Monkey Gone to Heaven. "There was a guy." Ok I'm listening, what's this guy up to
Soho Bani’s listen carefully - a white rabbit in a black wig a bit like a Beatle wig
Mar 3 - SOHO BANI - listen carefully (2026)
Some of this German rap album manages to be too corny sounding even for me but some of it gets just the right balance of hooks and beats and dumbo attitude
Hell is other people, which means other people have to step up and actually inflict it
Mum’s Gone To Iceland is Britpop! Volunteer to be the England manager if you want it in
Where is the full list btw?
Anakin and Padme define indie sleaze, Padme believes that the Wombats count
It’s funny when people try to graft landfill indie into indie sleaze, no sorry guys, we DID have a name for you
My “minor play I realised was a banger after actually seeing it“ pick would be Troilus And Cressida though, his great fuck you to the heroic epic
As a corny metafiction fuxxor of old I usually say The Tempest
Recently saw Othello for the first time tho and that’s a banger
And watching RAN made me remember how good King Lear is
Blue Swede Soul
I Cant Go For That is sampled in De La Soul’s Say No Go, I appreciate you might not be the person whose bells are most likely to be rung by this :)
I would have guessed Maneater (and fair enough it's second) - forgot this one a) existed and b) was them
The wild stats about Fleetwood Mac are the big 70s songs - they had two top 10 hits here across the entire decade, a re-release of "Albatross" and "Tusk". No Rumours song has ever charted higher than #24. And yet...!
