Itβs highway robbery, and most readers donβt know this. You know how zon gives you credits for using slow shipping options that you can then apply to digital purchases such as ebooks? I used to think zon eats that discount. Naive child π they pass it on to the author
Someone should establish a queer business network π€
Not on the creator side. We get 40% or 25% from what you paid. Couldn't find a $.99 example in my own royalty statements, but here's someone buying Us, Et Cetera in AU for $1.82 and me getting paid 46 cents for it π
Actually they probably arenβt. I donβt know how much it costs them to host an audiobook on their servers, but I doubt itβs much. Theyβre still taking your 60 cents and the audiobook rights holder gets 40 or 25 cents. Audible makes money anyway.
As far as free listens, Audible doesnβt allow us to pitch our books for that π© On the one hand, I dislike how much more free stuff they have nowadaysβlike whoβs gonna pay for anything if thereβs free?! On the other, it is a great promo tool for series. Wish it was available to indies
But itβs a very unique book so the algos donβt know what to do with it. In fact, Love Immortal made as much money on audio in 3 months as Us Etc did in a year π€·π» If you ask most indies who are doing well, theyβll probably tell you it takes about a year of consistent sales to recoup.
I think most people severely overestimate how much books sell π Itβs very difficult to sell 1000 copies unless youβre a popular author with a lot of marketing behind you. Feathers earned out very quickly (5 months) because fantasy is popular and Audible put it on sale. Us Etc hasnβt yet.
The narrator gets paid upfront. Thatβs why it costs $2-5k to produce an audiobook, which I then have to recoup from the royalties. The 40% royalty goes to me and the rest Audible keeps. It average to about $3.5-4.5 per copy sold if itβs bought for credit. Less when they put it on sale
Itβs a volume/discoverability issue. Most people get audiobooks on audible period. Audible algorithms also promote my books within their ecosystem so they show up recommended for listeners. Nothing else does that. People just wonβt find them on other retailers even if I did get higher royalties.
Thank you! I feel like weβre all amazonβs hostages in some way π«
Most of the audiobooks I read are π³οΈβπ as well! Thereβs still a big % of queer books out there that are indies coz traditional publishing just doesnβt produce many. And retailers outside of Amazon often want nothing to do with our books unfortunately, wonβt feature them in promotions etc
Aww thank you so much!! I hope you enjoy them!! β₯οΈβ₯οΈβ₯οΈβΊοΈ
Aw thank you so much!!! β₯οΈπ«Ά
Hope you enjoy!!! β₯οΈβΊοΈ
But if I go nonexclusive that number goes up to 1600 copies (25% royalty), which is A LOT of copies to sell!! Even for a trad book.
The math sadly doesnβt math well for us outside of Audible π₯Ί #booksky
I get why people wanna ditch Audible, but please donβt throw indies with the bathwater.
It costs $2k-5k to produce an audiobook. Being exclusive with Audible gives us 40% royalty. I have to sell roughly 1000 copies of Love Immortal just to earn back the money I spend on it.
Literally every time I see βunderratedβ anything on booktok, itβs a bunch of NYT bestsellers that follow π
Better late than never πβ₯οΈ I love all the new vampire stuff! Interview with the vampire show has started something good in the world
You are in a fight for your life and for the lives of future generations. There is no space in that fight to have sympathy for the proverbial Devil. They want to create a catastrophe for profit, your job is to stop them. Not to understand them, heal them, or fall for the lie you can join them.

Love Immortal just crossed over 500k pages read in KU πβ₯οΈππ₯³
The fastest any of my books reached that mile stone (3 months)!!
Thank you everyone for continuing to hype my gay vampires π³οΈβππ₯Ήπ«Ά

I love Trader Joes! But itβs like a twenty-five minute drive for me π©
10.99 actually π« which even if you were willing to pay that, thereβs still no eggs on the shelves
How about them egg prices? π€¦π»
Not sure what this says about my mental state but this week Iβve been rewatching The Walking Dead and the Last of Us π
