Yup. Not a throwaway but along these lines, 1st episode of House my husband ever watched was Three Stories. He was stunned & said “are they all like this?” No, but that *could* exist bec they had the real estate to try something structurally ambitious & the practice & experience to take a big swing
Absolutely. I have rewatched Supernatural a bunch and I am re-watching DS9 again for many reasons, but this is one of them.

Yes. If the construction of the character dynamics, the evolution of those relationships and the evolution of those people is all well constructed? I would vibe with pretty much anything the show was putting down.

My go to example of what we lost is Damar from DS9. Without that room to play he would have basically remained a featured extra.
Plus we'd never have the funniest line delivery in all of DS9 -"I was planning to surprise you."
I think you and Ron Moore may have very similar brains. Once he has figured out what a show is, he’s like, “how can I not do *exactly* that anymore and what is a more fucked up but still interesting array of things to do?”

There is a scene in the French Mistake, a great supernatural episode, that, I’m not kidding, reduces me to hysterical, crying laughter, every single time. This is a show about killing monsters and going to hell and Lucifer etc etc!!!!

In many ways, that was the promise of streaming! Creative people were excited about tailoring a season to what it needed to be, not what external factors demanded. But unfortunately, that was a false promise, as Mike Schur explained a while back www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/20...
👍🏻 what I’ve come to think of as Variety Pack television. Each season could have a whole bunch of different tones, Spotlights, character-focused episodes, moral dilemmas—you really just got a Whitman sampler type of thing. now it’s just, here’s everything mashed into 8 or 10, whether or not it works
I really hate characters not getting spotlight episodes anymore. All character development has to be mashed into eps with a lot of other elements. My new silly analogy is: croissants are great! But croissants are not potatoes. If you put a croissant in soup, it just isn’t a croissant anymore.
I’m not saying I would completely and eternally write off anyone who saw “unfinished business” as filler, but … I would think about it!
What’s filler to you might be exemplary world-building or moving character development to me. Many of the most engaging TV episodes of the past few decades are, by some definitions, mere “filler.” One working definition of filler could be: “This episode didn’t supply the things I personally like.”
