There’s a lot going on in this publicity photo for Yasujiro Ozu’s THAT NIGHT’S WIFE (1930). An alarm clock reads 1:20. A candle is burnt down halfway. So it’s late. And noirish. A man in a suit and hat points a gun—seemingly to protect his wife and child—and he’s aiming at someone off-screen. That someone casts a shadow, and he’s holding up a pair of handcuffs and some sort of strip that could conceivably be used to tie someone up. In short, a tense standoff.
