Bones (likely) of Columbia Black-tailed deer, seen while hiking among the oak forests of the Columbia Gorge. In the wild, average lifespan is said to be around six years. Predators such as cougars, black bear, or coyotes; or harsh winters can cause their death.

A close-up portrait of a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk, taken at Ridgefield NWR earlier this week. There is beautiful feather definition, and his yellow cere, downturned beak and eyes seem to show a concerned expression.

Flickers have the most elegant black dots and dashes among their brown feathers. They also have a gray throat and red cheek patches if they’re male and a chevron of black feathers on their breast. Those in our area have red shafts on the underside of their wing feathers, hence the name.

A pair of bald eagles frequently perch in the branches of a particular tree at Ridgefield NWR. Today they were calling out and mating at the top of the tree. 🫣 Though I did not get a photograph of them in action.
